then why "... sounds like you got stung with a bad transfer from a screener or something filmed in the cinema." after i explicitly noted the fine picture and sound quality ?

disc was a pre-release retail bd from a friend in the trade.

1080p widescreen 2.40 dts-hd ma audio

;)

last night watched the new release of "a hard day's night" - us criterion bd.
excellent pic, sound and all the extras in hd unlike the lacklustre 2-disc nz release which puts some docos on a dvd - bleech

criterion - 9/10

nz - 5/10

Caught Guardians of the Galaxy (3D) at an advanced screening.  Thoroughly enjoyed it.  Nice balanced 3D imagery and fantastic CGI effects.  8/10 for pure entertainment value that doesn't take anything to seriously.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

I also caught an advanced screening yesterday.  It was quite a fun movie.  At the start I felt like they had just skimmed over the exposition (nice change from the somewhat heavy-handed exposition we get in films these days), and spent the first 10 minutes scrambling to keep all the different characters in my head.  But after about 30 minutes I realised they had actually very subtly introduced all the main characters, the key elements of their backstory, relationships, etc.  It was a very effective way to introduce a complete novice to an unfamiliar comic-book franchise.

Prior to the film, I'd heard that Rocket was the standout character.  While I would agree that Rocket is great, I (and my wife) actually had a soft spot for Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel).  Before the film I had wondered why they bothered to cast someone as "high profile" as Diesel for a character that was 100% CGI, and who only had three words to say ("I am Groot!")  Having now seen the film I realise that Diesel did an amazing job of bringing emotion and character to a walking CGI tree with an extremely limited vocabulary.

3D was good - not too distracting, but probably not essential.  There is one post-credits scene, right at the very end - lasts less than 30 seconds.

Looking forward to the next installation of this franchise...

I also enjoyed (8/10) Guardians of the Galaxy. I knew nothing about it before I went and was surprised how much I enjoyed it.
Good one liners and impressive special effects / filming.

It was also great to be at a movie where the audience seemed glad to be there. No cell phones or noisy eaters or talkers.
Lots of people laughing at the in jokes.
Probably the biggest audience I've got in for many years (?200+)

A fun night.

A.

I saw Game of Thrones (season 1) on the shelf in the local library last Saturday. I had heard of it, but had never gotten around to watching it or learning about it (nor have I read the books).

Wow! What a great series! I must say that I'm hooked now and have reserved season 2.

more bds;

the zero theorem - what a load of crap, gilliam should retire, this plays like a third rate copy of brazil without the payoff. as expected it, the worse a movie, the better it will look on video 3/10

under the skin - a real curate's egg of a movie, a poor (wo)man's man who fell to earth ? needs another viewing. a provisional 5/10

I had the privilege last night of going to the world premiere of locally made I Survived a Zombie Holocaust. It was fantastic, lots of laughs, lots of blood and gore and an engaging story to boot. I highly recommend that when you get the chance to see it you do. 10/10
