Watched The Expendables 3 over the weekend, Brother in law and I were at the front of the theatre laughing our arses off at all of the little in jokes and teasings of classic lines. 8/10

Watched Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles last night at the Embassy in Wellington, thanks to Brother (the printer company) - Scott Palmer was there with me, enjoying drinks and nibbles before the movie.

As expect, a kids movie - would say 10 - 13 years olds would love the simple straight plot, easy to follow storyline and the (seemingly innocuous) jokes. I give it a 6/10.

The Rover; set in rural Australia 10 years after a global economic collapse. Guy Pearce is the lead and he's out to avenge the people that stole his car. Simple storyline but some complex underlying messages around trust and loyalty. I really enjoyed it, 8/10.

Prisoners; quite a dark movie starring Jake Gylenhal (Detective) and Hugh Jackman (Father) trying to find two little girls who have been abducted. I couldn't stop thinking about this for a couple of days afterwards, always a sign of a good film IMO. 8/10.

Watched 3 movies over the last week....

The Inbetweeners 2 very much the same style of laughs from the first movie if you enjoyed the TV series or first movie no reason why another round wouldn't be enjoyed.

Seed 2 by classic terrible movie maker Uwe Boll horror based around a serial killer out in the desert. Story jumps all over the place and is really hard trying to figure out what's going on unless you like being punished avoid watching lol.

On that note I would like to add this movie Jersey Shore Massacre as worst I've seen in a very long time I really found it hard to like anything about this movie and I was amazed that I bothered watching to the end....my partner certainly wasn't interested in watching to the end.

Elysium - 6/10

Since my daughter was born nearly 2 months ago, I've hardly had any time to watch movies. However, lately I've been using the extra awake time in the middle of the night to catch up on films that I haven't watched yet. Now it may be that my views are coloured by my sleep-deprivation, so I preface any comments with that context.

On Saturday morning, I watched Elysium. I felt it was decidedly average. I can't put my finger on anything that was particularly wrong with it, just that I felt underwhelmed by it. The concept itself is interesting - the earth is being depleted/abused/destroyed and so the wealthy up sticks and move to an earth-like space station orbiting the earth - but it seems to get subsumed by the "action" of Matt Damon wearing an exoskeleton suit that enhances his strength. It makes the story feel uneven in a way that the director Neil Blompkamp's previous film (District 9) didn't. Jodie Foster's character, pitched as the "bad guy" charged with defending Elysium, doesn't really develop in a meaningful way, and is robbed of any kind of decent character resolution.

But the biggest problem I had with the story was the over-simplistic way it presented the poverty issues. The message seemed to be: "the rich have all the resources and power, and the poor have none. All we have to do, then, is open the gates to Elysium and everyone will be happy. This is reinforced by the ending, which I will discuss below, so SPOILER ALERT!

One of the central macguffins is the medical pod which seems to cure all disease, provided you are a "citizen", but the citizenship is narrowly defined so only the lucky few living on Elysium have access to this technology. Why? Is it because the pods are rare or expensive? Doesn't seem like it, when several medi-ships are dispatched to cure the earth. And at any rate, instead of having the earth inhabitants making droids, they could be making medi-bays, so it doesn't seem like a resource question. They also work really fast, so presumably even if only a few pods were available, they could be running 24/7 to heal anyone with an ouchie. So what is the real reason for holding back on this tech? Other sci-fi films suggest that such situations exist because an infinitely healthy or curable populous becomes overburdened and unsustainable. This is an interesting premise, and leads to questions about stagnation of the gene pool when people can effectively live forever (Stargate SG1 discussed this through the Asgard story line). But Elysium doesn't bother with this kind of thinking. Instead, instant healing and respite rains down from heaven at the flick of a switch, and poverty is instantly solved.

This really spoiled what was an interesting premise; I was expecting something a bit more intellectual than Matt Damon in an exosuit punching people, and Shalto Copley beating people up. I think even Edge of Tomorrow managed to make the story more than just about mech-like suits. After the promise of District 9, this felt like a real let-down.

If anyone's interested I've stumbled onto a great podcast called "How Did This Get Made?". Basic premise is they watch terrible movies and review them. Very amusing :)

Watched Daniel Radcliffe in Horns a few days ago. Very good would recommend. Tis about a guy who is accused of murdering his girlfriend and grows horns on his head. He can't remember the night in questions so is trying to piece things all together.

I would easily rate it one of the best movies I've seen this year and my partner felt the same too.

Watched Rush last night - the story about the F1 rivalry between Nicki Lauda and James Hunt. Really well made movie about the intense rivalry between these two drivers. Thought it was quite a good insight into the pressures and dangers that these guys subject themselves to every time they race. Even the wife thoroughly enjoyed it.

Sci-fi challenges you to think up the explanation for that. Intellectual property rights and restricted source code? ; ).

But anyway look at the price of medical devices. They probably do make them but cannot afford to use them. Perhaps a subcontracting assembly worker at a US medical manufacturing plant without health insurance is in a similar position.

But seriously I expect it is a similar situation to many African countries. I'm sure it looks exactly that way to an African miner of gold or rare minerals - not uncommon to have one doctor per 100,000 people + huge distances to overcome to reach a facility and then the additional barrier of cost.

True - it's why I love sci-fi, because it challenges you to think. However this wasn't challenging sci-fi, it was lazy writing that didn't really put any energy into the more interesting aspects of the story. It felt like they came up with a "cool" idea (the exosuit), and then swirled a poverty sub-plot into the mix to give a reason for Matt Damon's character to take up arms. It just didn't really gel, though.
