Lizard1977: True - it's why I love sci-fi, because it challenges you to think. However this wasn't challenging sci-fi, it was lazy writing that didn't really put any energy into the more interesting aspects of the story. It felt like they came up with a "cool" idea (the exosuit), and then swirled a poverty sub-plot into the mix to give a reason for Matt Damon's character to take up arms. It just didn't really gel, though.

I can't argue with that but there are not many sci-fi films that make the grade on that level. So many are just shooters like Battle Los Angeles I have to celebrate a bit when a film like Elysium comes along with actual story elements and technology central to the plot + space travel ; ).

Edge of Tomorrow - It was Groundhog Day but with Aliens destroying the Earth and Tom Cruise's ego in the lead role. Otherwise, it was great, although techincally, a remake. 7/10. I could have given it a 9.5 if Mark Wahlberg (or even The Rock) or similar played the lead.

I find Tom Cruise to be an ego-centric form of life that is beyond comprehension and I generally avoid titles with his name anywhere on the cover, I'd say watch it if that's not a problem for you and you like sci-fi, well thought out alien concepts and CGI.

Also watched this a few days back although I enjoyed it I would have liked more detailed scenes showing him do some of his 12 trials as 10-15 seconds of him fighting big monsters wasn't enough.

Just watched Django Unchained on Netflix and it was most enjoyable, despite being horrifically violent. Definitely don't watch with kids around. Otherwise a very entertaining film. Had just watched 12 Years a Slave earlier, another excellent movie also depicting slavery in the US, 12 Years was very heavy, depressing and a bit slow, while Django had a humorous spin, was fast paced but still depicted the horrible realities of slavery.

Fury, at the Reading cinema. It wasn't my pick and I went reluctantly as I'm not usually a fan of Brad Pitt movies.

However, surprisingly, I really enjoyed it. Good narrative and a fairly engrossing story line. However, not for the squeamish - think Saving Private Ryan for the type of scenes it had in it.

wasn't going to see this, as i'm not a big nolan fan, but got a free ticket
this is going to be as polarising as anything he's done.

its full of;
pretty pictures and sound
recycled plot
dodgy science
clunky dialogue
too long !!!

I'm a sucker for WW2 films but want a bit of common sense reality.

Having opened with how poor the American tanks were and do brave crews to go against the much better German tanks....

The were too many hits on US tanks that bounced off.... And charging across open fields towards german camouflaged anti tank units which have already destroyed a column ... Yet not loose any US tanks..

No tank is going to lead into narrow town streets with infantry behind them as too at risk from German infantry with hand held anti tank weapons.

SS troops dont know how to flank a single strong point... Let's all run at it rather than walking a couple of hundred yards to left or right and bypass it. Must have need recruited from the Japanese banzi school.

Yes, that was why I scored it 8/10 instead of 9/10.

I'm a bit of an amateur military history buff, and I spotted a few errors:

SPOILER ALERT

1. Only an idiot would attack three emplaced 88s across open terrain with a squadron of Sherman's line abreast. It's not credible that they did so and survived, much less won.

2. As you say, by that point in the war pretty much all commanders had realised that using tanks to attack in narrow streets was a quick way of getting your tanks destroyed. Odd that experienced crews are portrayed as doing this.

3. It's just *barely* credible that a Sherman would survive a side hit at 15 yards from a panzerfaust (there's a reason the British crews nicknamed it the Ronson - lights first time). But several in quick succession - I think not.

4. Why are the tanks repeatedly shown firing on the move? That was against training and doctrine, for both the Germans and the Allies, and pretty much ensured you would miss. The gunsights weren't gyro stabilised in those days.

Still gave it an 8 though because of decent acting, with the film carried by acting and atmosphere rather than just special effects, and a (fairly) good story.

"The Rover" starring Guy Pearce

Based in aussie outback 10 years after "The Collapse", sort of has a Fallout 3 feel to it. Very film festival with its cinematography and soundtrack. Starts a bit slow then builds a steady pace with the main point to the plot only revealed at the very end.

A good watch in my books.

Speaking of Christopher Nolan, if anyone hasn't seen Memento, go and see it now. Twice.

Just watched it for the second time and it blew me away even more than the first. Like a lot of Nolan's movies there was a significant amount of plot up for interpretation, which I think is one of the biggest strengths in his writing/directing. But yes, you really need to watch this movie twice to really appreciate it. Amazing piece of art.
