They all have cameras, failure to Yield for an Emergency vehicle is a moving vehicle offense, and they should be reported, and fined.

You watch how quick people become considerate after that :)

Might want to double check that "fact". Paramedic sitting next to me confirms cameras are not in any WFA vehicles but potentially being trialed in some St John vehicles.

Got a letter from Rural Post.

They’ve decided they’ll no longer deliver parcels to the door because it takes too long to open people’s gates and they “don’t get paid enough”.

I’m not sure how them not getting paid enough has anything to do with customers, who pay what they are asked to pay. We pay courier charges to get things delivered. Will those charges fall if those things are no longer delivered properly.

Rural post used to be a kind of pleasant service where you knew the postman and they would collect your outgoing mail etc and pass the time of day with you. No more, it seems.

I like writing letters, so NZ Post are about to get a nice written complaint to deal with.

ChatGPT:

Good news, everyone!

It has come to my attention that you, in your infinite wisdom, have decided to cease the noble tradition of delivering parcels directly to the door! Your reason? The audacity of homeowners to have gates that must be opened, and the sheer impertinence of your employees who feel they are not compensated enough for such exertions!

As a man of science and a connoisseur of efficient delivery services, I must express my profound dismay at this turn of events! The very fabric of our civilized society unravels when a delivery service balks at the modest effort of opening a gate! Such trifles are the bread and butter of your profession, the cornerstone of your existence!

The suggestion that your employees are not adequately recompensed for the simplest tasks of their trade is preposterous! If the act of opening a gate is too taxing for their delicate constitutions, perhaps they should seek employment more suited to their feeble capabilities!

I implore you, in the name of all that is logical and efficient, to reconsider this misguided policy and return to the time-honored practice of delivering parcels to the door! Failure to do so will result in the severance of my patronage and the dissemination of my grievance to all who will listen!

Yours in righteous indignation,

Our new house is potentially awkward for couriers. Our nominal address is a pedestrian only gate that leads down a path about 40m to our property's actual entrance. Our vehicle access is via a ROW easement from a different street. Many online orders now don't have anywhere to explain this. The letterbox is at the top of the path.

I expected the worst, but so far all couriers have either worked it out or were already familiar with the property and the items have all arrived at the right place, none left at the street gate where all and sundry wander past. I'm pleasantly surprised so far.

I used to live in a house at the corner of a busy intersection which had its challenges. The driveway which was tucked around the corner from the actual address proved confusing for unsuspecting visitors. A solid, well-built brick fence thankfully acted as a robust barrier to the actual house from the shenanigans that went on at that intersection. Delivery drivers having just negotiated a free left turn would too quickly approach and enter the driveway only to jump on the brakes so as to carefully fit between the two brick gate posts. Inevitably some ended up sandwiched between impatient or numbnut drivers keeping their gaze to the right as they continue drive forward and said posts.  Definitely a trap for kids that had just got their full license and are now making some money on pizza deliveries...  If you failed to read the warnings on the order you'd pay for it.

I'd heard that a tanker truck had flipped itself onto the roof of that house but between said fence and the double bricked walls no major damage was done.

The persistent replacements my iPhone makes when swipe typing.

Pay is often replaced with post. And with AC, ABs and all sorts of other things. Random names I’ve never used even!

I’ve had Android phones before that get this right almost all the time; why my incredibly powerful iPhone 15 Pro Max cannot do it, I’ve no idea.

I’m glad your Android phones have worked in the past, because my Samsung phone is just as hopeless as your iPhone when it comes to swipe typing. It’s so hopeless, I use voice dictation if no one is within earshot.

Probably nothing to do with how much NZ Post get paid, more to do with how much they pay their contractors.

It used to be better before the introduction of the latest keyboard algorithm - was it pre iOS17?

Existing bottle of dishwashing liquid: "Proudly made in New Zealand"
New bottle: "Made in Australia"

Can't have been that proud then...

Agreed, although my Android experiences have always been better. Watched a few S24 reviews and some of the stuff on that phone really makes iPhone look a bit shabby.
