Handsomedan:
I remember how devastated I was when I was told to stop playing football (soccer). I sat in car and cried a bit. Not how I wanted to retire frfom a sport I'd played for over 40 years on and off.
But...that's how I ended up rediscovering Mountain Biking. And it's now my obsession.
Silver linings and all of that nonsense.

It is funny how things turn out! I remember in 08 I ran the 37km Routeburn classic in 5 h 36 min, pulled up lame in the middle, but no way was I pulling out and finished very lame in my right hip. Turned out either pre race or during did a hip labral tear. So that was the end of my brief adventure racing stint! I was completely devastated when the final results came in and yup few tears might have popped in. But like @Handsomedan went nuts on mountain biking and as time went on, hip pain combined with healthy daily exercise, doesn't seem to be really a big deal as it was at the time. Think I need to re take that advice as I look at my giant bike unused for far to long...

It's a hard sport on all joints really, and weight is a factor when it comes to wear and tear on them. Life can be a challenge sometimes.

Have you considered Pickleball? I have friends who are seriously into it and part of the appeal is that it can be easily adjusted to all levels of play. You can probably find a category that is suitable to your injury limitations and move up as you feel better.

Talking pain! Left bottom draw open. Walked into it in the dark while walking past which was quite stupid really, but boy that hurt. Managed to bruise both shins and left elbow as I fell over the top of it. Ouch.

Funnily enough I've just started using a carry bag a little bit. I have two sets and travel a lot for work. So much easier to fly or pack my car with a carry bag. That said, it was too much golf that put paid to the carry bag in the first place. Heard a rather large crack at the top of my backswing, then tremendous pain on the way down. Broke a bit of bone off and it jammed in the elbow joint. Too much golf and cricket and it wore out.

So I've used a push buggy and then last few years a full electric trundler which is brilliant.

Yikes! Hope that comes right and quickly.

I do try hard to keep my carry bag light as possible. Minimum possible golf balls, remove umbrella and wet weather gear unless needed etc. So good to be able to walk across greens, up and down banks etc without the trundler. My bag is just about worn out and falling to bits. Next one will be even lighter.

Notice of a fairly complete network services outage scheduled "to minimise impact on users". If they want to minimise impact why have they timed it for peak working hours, 10pm - 6am?

Surgery sorted the elbow ten years ago, mostly perfect since then.

Ah the carry bag dilemma. I live in Auckland. So remove rain gear, brolly etc at your peril! Probably the best thing about a trundler is each Saturday I just load it right up. And it pulls me up hills 🤣

I agree, it's nice to scoot around more directly, but I don't miss the tired shoulders etc. Something I'd never noticed until I got a Clicgear and pushed for the first time in about twenty years.

Unfortunately, this is a right arm issue, so all racquet sports are out for a while. I'll be fine. It's just frustrating to be injured right at the start of the season.

I feel fortunate I have access to good doctors and physio's. I just wish they would do the boring rehab for me. :)

My workmates suggested I take the opportunity to learn to play left handed ;)

Something that really annoys the snot out of me, two driving habits that are closely related.

  1. Drivers not having good spatial awareness. You see this is double passing lanes on corners. Cars cross the double yellow line and I have to swerve to avoid!
  2. Cars that turn right to turn left!!! FFS learn to drive. You do not need to half pull in next lane to turn left. Cars have power steering these days.

The moving right to turn left is fine if they dont slow down, which is the whole reason to take the corner wide. Its when they indicate left, slow down to 20something and thing swing out to the right that is the worst, as at that point cars will be passing them.

I mean in the context of double or more one-way lanes. The issue is if you are the one behind said car, so you either slow down, stop, or pull right yourself, putting your car at risk of getting hit / clipped by another car. And worst if that following driver is not paying attention. It daisy chains.

Phantom roadworks.

Signs and cones have been put out in our street from to top bottom and in many sidestreets.
Warnings of "Road Works - Tow Away - No Parking" on said signs.

Signs and cones have now been there for three days.
No sign of any roadworkers.

These are the same roadworks they didn't do a month or so ago.

We have two cars parked outside our house on thoe road, as we don't have enough space for all of our family's cars (and we often have two more when the girlfriends stay).
They've been parked around the corner along with all the other cars normally parked in our street. THose neighbours must be getting fed up. It's a lot of cars in a relatively small area, as the whole of our street and the entrances to all the sidestreets have been designated No Parking/Tow Away zones.

If the roadworks don't happen tomorrow, I am moving the signs and cones down the street and parking the cars back on our road. They won't be working over a long weekend - I can say that with relative certainty.

There was a "cyclists ahead" sign between Levin & Otaki for months. I suspect the world's longest cycle event never occurred.

Or as a friend of mine puts it "drivers who have no idea how wide their car is". There's an awful lot of those around, which you really notice when you drive down a road parked solid with cars on both sides.

Speaking of things that annoy, when did it become accepted practice to leave all of your cars on the road? A cursory search of images of NZ suburbs in the 1980s shows streets that aren't choked with parked cars, when did it change?
