From a friend, New World's Covid19 alert:

"Together we've got this" was perhaps not the best choice of words for Covid19.

"Lockdown could last weeks if Covid cluster is large - expert"

Gosh, is there an article somewhere with a headline such as "Poking own eyes with sharp cutlery will most likely cause permanent harm, expert says"

As a general rule, a headline containing "could" indicates an article to avoid.

It's an easy way generate a bit of clickbait. Ask an expert for the worst case scenario, then headline "[Worst case scenario] could happen - [expert]". Pad the whole thing out with a potted history ("covid, which has caused lockdowns round the world,...." and some basic science ("a coronavirus is so-called because it has spike proteins"), and bob's your uncle.

I pretty much have given up reading covid news, for the reasons mentioned here. Its bordering on a frenzy

Then there are the non journo's. Goff pleads for no lockdown its bad for business. Garner only wants cargo at the border. Garner ask the PM how long the lockdown will be just after its announced

I'd have thought they would have picked a photo showing people heading out of the city, not a huge crush of traffic entering it.

Two weeks ago One News headlined with "No new cases of COVID 19 reported".   So COVID or no COVID COVID is news.

Both The NZ Herald & Stuff border on tabloid journalism.

I think it was Bill Ralston who once said "New Zealand is a news poor country" while he was head of TVNZ news & current affairs.

If I want real news I'll go to BBC or read the New York Times.

I go to ABC, which at least is in our part of the world. Agree that the news coverage here is abysmally poor. Hey,  it's a weekend! Time to close everything down and go to the beach because  of course we all know news never happens on a weekend. Or a holiday. Or any other time we might have to pay journalists extra, not that there are many real journalists left here.

Basically, "influencer" lifestyle with lots of Instagram photoshoots that may or may not reflect reality but hey... Let's publish crap anyway.

To paraphrase - I created an Instagram profile with photoshoots backed by a marketing campaign, so that I can get money to do photoshoots backed a marketing campaign, so that I can get money to do photoshoots backed by a marketing campaign... And that's how I became a millionaire.

Inspiring stuff.

At the rate we are dumbing down, we should make it back to Planet of the Apes in a generation or so. I hope the squid do better.

I for one welcome our pending ape overlords. They can't be any worse than the ones we have now. :P
