SJB: I wouldn't be surprised to see them drop the 6pm news down to 30 minutes now that they won't have another FTA 6pm TV news to compete with. They already got rid of the 7pm post news show where they used to interview politicians, and now just have a magazine style show. It has all become so dumbed down. It makes it easier for politicians if they don't have to appear on the prime time news programs to answer questions, like they did when Campbell Live or Holmes used to ask them the hard questions .

At one time politicians were pretty much obligated to appear and justify themselves live every night. When the breakfast shows started to break through in ratings, politicians used those in a soft way to get to that audience.

Later they figured out it was a good excuse not to front up to the five day a week evening interview shows. As I recall that happened during the Key era. Not related to National or Key just the timing. The audience may have changed. These days a huge number of people could not get back from work to home by 6pm if they tried.

The half buried hard news Sunday shows on both channels do incredibly well at breaking a huge number of stories that are used throughout the week. It is not equivalent I agree. All this cutting could actually lead to politician live interviews to some extent coming back in 6-7pm slot again.

Not to worry, we've sorted that out - we're going to build more motorways.

I am surprised to hear that Fair Go is still going. I can remember watching it back in the 80s and 90s when Philip Alpers and Kevin Milne were presenting it, but I had assumed that it was long gone.

IMO Fair Go was a shadow of its former self.

Less about getting kiwis a fair go, and more about - hey this bad thing happened to this person, and we can't do anything about it, but here is what you should look out for so you don't fall for the same thing...

What now is still going. Looks like it is on Sunday mornings when it used to be on Saturday mornings

Fair go seemed to lose it when they got rid of the set. Now they seem to stand at weird podium rather than a sit down set. But it is a big loss for consumer protection in NZ. They also questioned governemnt ministers over law changes

I don't get why they're keeping 4 presenters on Breakfast but cutting Fair Go and Sunday/Q+A? Why not make the news 30 minutes and cut back Breakfast using fewer presenters? Hang onto Fair Go and Sunday and/or Q+A. Something like that.

Why would you cut shows that likely make money and are cheap to produce?

Fair Go and Sunday have teams behind them with associated expenses for 30-60 minutes of airtime. They will be more expensive to produce than purely studio shows that make 15 hours of airtime each week.

It had its place before ripoff companies could get called out on social media and then have a resulting pile-on. There is also now more consumer protection and dispute resolution services than when it was started. Its time really has come.

Also people will pay to appear on the breakfast show, not so much with fair go where they are angering potential customers.

I lot of trades people don't have social media, which is why many of the stories were more recently about roofers and other building trades. The consumer protection around building sector is terrible and expense to resolve.

I wonder if they would be bold enough to do anything to Shortland Street? While not quite the audience pull it once was, it still has an okay number of viewers.

Also: O’Donnell confirmed TVNZ did not consider cutting 1News down to a half hour.

"What we see with the one-hour news bulletin, it’s an incredibly profitable hour of broadcasting and it also delivers incredibly strong on our digital platform."

I guess it's still the same number of camera operators, floor crew, reporters, etc for a 30 minute bulletin as a 60 minute one.

TBH I think TV News and investigative journalism  does need to be taxpayer funded by NZ On Air. Some programs like Q&A but aren't in prime time. But I think for the sake of a strong democracy, the government needs to take some urgent action with NZOA funding. I think that the fact that two TV New organisations have slashed news to such an extend within days of one another, and just after a new government has come in, can't be a coincidence.  But imo it is in governments  best interests for the media to be weak as it makes things a lot easier for them to get through changes and less accountability to the public.

johno1234: Online article today about International Womens' Day and an all female crew on a JQ flight has had two different stock photos of a female pilot... both with FO stripes, whilst talking about a female captain Katherine Stacey.

That is correct. The article discusses female pilots. An FO "First Officer" is also a pilot. There will be at least two female pilots on the flight.

They talked about a named “captain” and used stock photos of a FO. Disrespectful lazy and ignorant but providing eye candy for clicks.

Another lesson here is that if your workplace gets taken over by a 'Global' company that has a falling share price.
Bad stuff can happen.

Discovery had lost 35M/yr the last 2 years on their local business here and are in the red for well over 100M in NZ according to other reporting. It's lucky they havn't got rid of the lot..

I'm all for half hour news personally and let them extend it if theres big stories, we don't need the constant filler on how taylor swift is related to a poet as a 6th cousin for ~10% of the program and that kind of fluff is constantly added to fill time.

Cut the silly back and forth questions between the anchor and reporter. It’s fake scripted crapola. Just report the facts please and leave options out.
