We are watching Alone, series 7, Wednesday on Choice TV.

First time we have seen this and so far it is 10/10. It is very interesting and insightful on what is takes to survive. My teenagers have also been very interested as they have never seen of thought of someone living in survival mode. Lots of learning from watching, while reality TV can be painful this one is done very well and lets you get close up to the experience.

Alone is an American reality television series. It follows the self-documented daily struggles of 10 individuals as they survive in the wilderness for as long as possible using a limited amount of survival equipment. With the exception of medical check-ins, the participants are isolated from each other and all other humans. They may "tap out" at any time, or be removed due to failing a medical check-in.

Queens Gambit Season/Series Finale. 10/10 Wow. I really really enjoyed this series, it was a bit weird in places, but it was well written, and well acted. They did a fantastic job of showing the two sides of her.

9/10

I really enjoyed the series despite the riveting drama only being sustained 3/4 of the time. The other 1/4 was very hit-and-miss but every episode had something, even the weird bits, to help forget the worst scenes.

It was a lot like a graphic novel but she is a more engaging "superhero" and down-to-earth hero than most. The visual contrasts were often very obvious and this added a lot to the drama in scenes. There was a lot of stylish fashion against dowdy backgrounds and a lot of the stylish lead against dowdy opponents/crowds.

Start Trek Discovery is going ok, but not as great as the previous seasons.

The Madalorian is disappointing - they have him going around the galaxy when what we all want is answers... I can seen it will drag on and on and not answer anything by the end of this season.

Grey's Anatomy is back - and COVID is the main attraction really. Annoying flashbacks to try and fill the gap between the last season and the current one.

I'm enjoying Star Trek, but it's definitely slower than the last season

Yet to watch the latest season of The Mandarin Duck, but looking forward to it, despite what people are saying...I just like the Star Warts universe and SciFi in general

I gave up on Greys Anatomy after she'd shacked up with her 11th doctor...season 3 I think....

Star Trek took a while to get going but now that they have got back together etc perhaps it will get better.

Mandalorian...mmm. First series I really enjoyed. This one seems to be not as good. The episode with the big sand thing was OK but the subsequent ones have been a bit ...lacking, somehow.

We have watched a lot of crime shows - the Cold Case ones, Unexplained and so on. Some good ones but it gets a bit repetitive.

Netflix could really use some new content; there is a lot of mediocrity in there.

Star Trek Discovery is all over the place. Last season went off the rails in it's back half and I was hoping they might do better in season 3 without the constraints if being set in an established timeline like season 1 and 2. Unfortunately it feels like they only have a vague idea of where they're going, and it's a little too "adventure of the week" for my liking.

Which is exactly the same problem with The Mandalorian - except The Mandalorian managed to get to this point in two seasons only...

Westside Season 6 (final episode, final season) - 5/10

For a show I've quite enjoyed (alongside the show that started it all - Outrageous Fortune), it was a fairly ho-hum, somewhat disappointing way to end.  I felt that season 6 as a whole suffered in much the same way that season 6 of Outrageous Fortune suffered.  And like so many shows that try to land something gracefully, it didn't quite stick the landing.

Speaking as someone who has re-watched Outrageous Fortune many times I enjoyed most of Westside as a prequel show, watching as they did a reasonably good job of fitting in with the "canon" that was established in Outrageous Fortune.  Along the way there were nods to significant moments from the orginal show, but one in particular rankled with me.  The relationship between Rita and her granddaughter Loretta (both portrayed by Antonia Prebble) was a major story point in Season 4 of Outrageous Fortune, making much of how close Loretta was to her grandma.  Yet as we come to the end of season 6, with Rita all but dead as the show fades to black, Loretta is less than a year old.  I was hoping when season 6 started that they might mirror the approach used in season 1, where they jumped a year each episode, taking Loretta from a baby to a young girl, learning at her grandma's side how to scheme and connive.  Instead, the story limps along for much of season 6, focussing on wrapping up a nearly 2-season arc involving Frankie Figgs.  I see parallels with the final seasons of Outrageous Fortunes, which saw the main story of the Wests subsumed by the scheming of the Gregans - in both cases it made the final seasons of both shows weaker than their earlier seasons.

Strangely, both Outrageous Fortune and Westside were strongest in seasons 2 and 3.  Season 4 was okay, but from 5 onwards it starts to decline.  It's always a shame when a show as fun as this comes to a less than grand end, but I guess that is the curse of any show running longer than a single season - how to finish in a way that is emotionally satisfying to invested fans.  Time and again we see how hard this is, yet each time we hope that this will be the show to stick the landing.  Sadly, in my view, Westside didn't really make it.

Warrior Nun - Netflix NZ

Let me break it down for you:

There's a group of Nuns that are also warriors. They have a leader that has a "halo" embedded in her back. They fight demons. They're mostly in Spain.

The original leader dies battling (demons with machine guns?) and the halo chooses to be shoved grotesquely into another person's back - but she's not what they expect!

Cue a "teenager" who is in her 20's romping about in Spain with an American accent, fighting things and people, while a crazy scientist wants the halo as a power source to run her science project.

Love interest, plus friendly badass not-nun and bad guy at the top of the Catholic church all combine for episodes of nonsense.

I'm up to Episode 6...haven't worked out if I hate it yet.

6/10

I quite enjoyed Westside and Outrageous Fortune generally, but I always felt they were ruined by the juvenile sex scenes and foul language. It always just seemed a bit irrelevant and unnecessary.
