I will be shoe shopping in the USA when I am there.
Better price, better quality....well it has been every time we have been overseas , UK/US footwear just last longer.
My rule is: footwear made by a fashion label: junk. Footwear made by a footwear label: maybe ok. So if you see some shoes in a Calvin Klein or Tommy Hilfiger store, avoid. But if you see them in an Ecco store, they might be OK.
I would expect the shoes you see in a USA Asics store to be the same as the ones you see in an NZ store. All made in China, Bangladesh or some other sweatshop.

The New Balance ones I got in the UK and the ones I got in the USA lasted far longer than anything I have bought in NZ.

Until they are not. I remember buying Bostonian shoes in the 90s, made in the USA. The last time I visited a store they were all made in China.

At least I should be able to get a matching replacement without too much trouble.
Or so I thought. Briscoes online support has elected to go with the "try fobbing him off" technique, so hopefully the local shop will be better. Hopefully.

same model shoes? made in the same place?
kind of an unfair comparison if thats not the case.

Different model, one you can not get here. This time I will bring back 2-4 pairs

This sort of crap is still going on with schools pressuring kids not to play both league and rugby. It used to be much more overt but it's still utterly ridiculous.
Maybe the unwritten class divide is still in effect...
"I regret to say that we of the F.B.I. are powerless to act in cases of oral-genital intimacy, unless it has in some way obstructed interstate commerce." — J. Edgar Hoover
"Create a society that values material things above all else. Strip it of industry. Raise taxes for the poor and reduce them for the rich and for corporations. Prop up failed financial institutions with public money. Ask for more tax, while vastly reducing public services. Put adverts everywhere, regardless of people's ability to afford the things they advertise. Allow the cost of food and housing to eclipse people's ability to pay for them. Light blue touch paper." — Andrew Maxwell

You've quoted a british article which isn't really applicable for New Zealand. Rugby in the UK is very much a public (private) school thing whereas in New Zealand it's not. There are some class aspects of it but it's really not the same. Rugby is more egalitarian in New Zealand while still being the establishment sport.

They should all just play medieval football, for which the main rule was that as long as no-one gets killed it's legal. Games these days are so woosy and unexciting...
