same model shoes? made in the same place?

kind of an unfair comparison if thats not the case.

Different model, one you can not get here. This time I will bring back 2-4 pairs

can't really compare then right?

Could be made from different materials, manufacturing techniques or in a different factory etc

The correct thing to criticise would be the range offered and/or the price (if it was significantly different for the same shoes being offered in both countries.)

Trees that not only shed their leaves, but also any number of other matter - berries, flowers and small branches.
Next door neighbour has a tree that is a year-round pest. She's having it trimmed, but it needs killing off. It is horrible.

I understand the reasons, and I don't shop there, but I am sad to see Smith and Caugheys will close.

I'll miss their Xmas Display and the very occasional time they had something I wanted.

IMO Auckland City Council have really killed the CBD and it feels like every day they make decisions to make it worse.

It's been a long drawn-out death. I was stuck in Auckland CBD overnight in 1997 and thought at least I could do some Xmas shopping. "Sorry you'd have to go out to one of the big malls to find anything open."

Council killing parking and then the homeless people that make using public transport to get in and walking up queen street a risky endeavor. Cant even say it needs to be sorted out on reddit without being accused of being a troll and told that there is no problem and its all a political setup.

Sad. It's another little strand of social fabric gone. I'm amazed it has lasted this long - there's no way in hell that I'd go anywhere near the CBD/Queen St these days voluntarily. The council/AT is so stridently hostile to driving in there that I can't drive and park. I don't particularly want to use PT when there are better options, and most of all, the area is now unpleasant to dangerous with  smelly, drunk and drugged troubled people ranting and raving, begging or threatening in doorways and benches.

Have you suggested to the neighbour that it might be better gone? Also, you are entitled to place fallen leaves and branches from a neighbour's tree onto their property:

Unfortunately some people get really funny when you talk about cutting down trees because they mistake a tree being there for nature and don't want to solve the problems it causes. IMO any tree in urban areas should be subject to the same controls that buildings have about shading, nuisense etc but sadly you can block someone's view with a tree and pretty much get away with it, but put a fence or a shed in the same situation and the council will be all over you.

Footpath near work gets covered with crap that falls off trees on private land, starts to rot and is a slipping hazard - council dont care. If I was to litter it with slippery pieces of paper in the same way, I would be done for littering.

Trees are nice when they are not causing you problems. However:

What the District Court might decide?

The District Court may make an order to trim or remove a tree if:

  • there is a risk or damage to your property or harm to people
  • the tree is unduly interfering with your enjoyment of your property - for example, because:

    • of falling leaves, fruit, branches
    • it is blocking the light or your view
  • the tree is interfering with your drains or gutters

And when did that last ever happen that someone got a tree removed vs simply making a council complaint when a neighbour has built too close to the fence or has put up a shade sail that is making noise?

To be fair, so many NZ towns have dying main streets.

Yeah except in those towns its the road that you drive on to go thru the town, and then a better road gets made going past it. See the Disney documentary "cars" to see what happens.

CBD was a destination till it became hard to get to, smelt of piss everywhere and had aggressive beggars and shoplifters from the supermarkets.

Online shopping has done a LOT of damage. Its cheaper to have a warehouse on the edge of town with everything on pallet racks than a shop in town.
Big box stores killed off the local shop owners
Shopping malls where it is all indoors, better parking (under roof).

Even the likes of San Francisco have suffered this with parts of downtown SF being considered for demolition and housing built. Covid turned a lot of people onto online shopping and they have not gone back.

Yep, we're looking at you, WalMart & Amazon.

"Create a society that values material things above all else. Strip it of industry. Raise taxes for the poor and reduce them for the rich and for corporations. Prop up failed financial institutions with public money. Ask for more tax, while vastly reducing public services. Put adverts everywhere, regardless of people's ability to afford the things they advertise. Allow the cost of food and housing to eclipse people's ability to pay for them.
