Unfortunately, the poor kid paid a small fortune to have a number of other little things done like an oil leak, plugs and coils, new tyres etc, so selling it will net him a loss if he decides to go down that road after the repair.

Sorry to hear that. The car sounds like a real lemon. Is there no recourse at all?

The fact that a Mechatronic unit in a VW DSG transmission is $5500 for a car we only paid $6500 for.
That's just the part.
Add another $2000 labour to that.

Our local mechanic sourced a replacement gearbox and will have it fitted including parts and labour for $3k.

It sucks for him but it’s probably not a bad thing for him to get the euro experience out of the way early in life. VAG cars are a bit like that, lovely when new and a money pit when they get older.

Been there, done that, got the repair bills. My wife still misses driving it though.

I used to tell the kids that if they can't afford to purchase a brand new European car, chances are they can't afford the upkeep on a used one.

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.

Keep calm, and carry on posting.

Possibly a case of how well/badly the car was looked after by the previous owners. They're a car that goes pretty well and therefore attracts drivers that thrash them.

There is a reason that they sell for so little for the performance they give. Lesson learned and leave the audi/vw stuff till they're on 6 figures and can afford it.

Useless suppliers who have to be chased for quotes then can't supply on time.

Just hopeless.

Not really. Mechatronic units are a known potential issue with VAG dual clutch transmissions. They can let go at any time for any reason and how well maintained the car is has no bearing on it. They're not a serviceable item so it doesn't matter whether you've taken to the dealer since new for scheduled servicing or skipped a few services. We were just lucky that my wife's mechatronic unit let go 3 days after we got a recall notice from Audi to replace the mechatronic unit. They even covered the cost of the towing to get it to them as we couldn't drive it. We were very fortunate.

Unfortunately there's a whole host of these sort of things with VAG engines and transmissions. That's of course not mentioning their criminal conduct around emissions.

That's brutal. Is it some kind of Golf GTi? I'm a fully grown adult and I still wince at thought of owning some cars. I'm trying to think of an equivalent for when I was younger. I think Subaru fit that description a little. I was always into Hondas rather that the Aussie/US muscle growing up. And it used to be the Legacy RS, WRXs etc that were the dream cars, but much more complex to own. Fine when they were new and looked after, but just everything was so much expensive.

I changed the plugs once on my Legacy GT. Ugh.

That said I have a job change coming up and whilst I get to keep my work car (which is a bonus) I keep lusting after Alfa Romeo stationwagons. Hopefully I'm not posting something similar in this thread in two years time!

Not even a GTi

It IS a Golf though - just a wagon with a 1.4TSi engine (albeit Turbo & Supercharged) - of course being the person he is, it couldn't just be a normal car - he had one of those and it wasn't amazing to drive.

It's a lovely car, but as I said to him at the time - every Euro car I have ever had has been the best car I have ever owned, until it wasn't. When things go wrong, it's usually pretty catastrophic - I learned my lesson with my fleet of cars over the years.
Wouldn't be so bad if he wasn't a student with a part time job.

Bought privately a year ago and it was checked when bought - all came up clean and tidy, with just a known issue of ignition coils needing doing (which is an easy job).
He does a lot of miles as he's a keen surfer and mountain biker, so it's probably justa case of mileage and age catching up with it. It's what you get with these, unfortunately.
Bulletproof, right up until the fatal shot.

Ah I did wonder if it was going to be the twincharged one. Yeah, my sympathies. I have a project car (mid nineties Civic) with 356,000kms on the body. Third engine but that's my doing. The original engines are still doing over 250,000k.

But compared to anything, really straightforward and simple to work on and for the most part are still easyish to find. But would I want a child driving it? In this day and age of bigger and bigger cars, absolutely not. No vehicle stability control, ABS, air bags, maps! Does have climate control and a CD player though 😂

These AI companies in the news again, arguing about copyright and what they're allowed to do. Instead of doing the right thing (preferably something like having a form on the site to request deletion of copyrighted content) they just sit there and fight, and come up with statements about how it's a "grey area" even when the copyright holder has explicitly told them no. Why does every big company have to be evil all the time?

If any of my hypothetical content that I cared about was in there then I'd be insisting on deletion but I'd have no idea where to turn if they just said "yeah, nah, we don't acknowledge your rights as the copyright holder".

When you have all the money, laws cease to apply to you. Apparently.
