networkn: I now have a hard and fast rule, I do not buy anything that does not use USB-C and at the earliest opportunity, I'll replace anything I have with a USB-C version.

And for embedded/SCADA-type use, a barrel jack / Phoenix connector and 8-36VDC input.  Anything relying on USB for power is an educational toy, not equipment I want controlling anything.

Industrial control uses DC as a standard. Building controls are generally 24VAC.

elpenguino: The thing about the cats is they don't get attention because they're not bagging their poop up afterwards, leaving dogs to get the blame for all faeces related littering.

Cats bury their poo so a lot of the time you never see it, while dogs leave it in a mound in the middle of the lawn. They have much better PR management than dogs.

As an owner, you can also train your cat (as a kitten) to use a certain location by spreading cat litterbox contents in the area you want them to use.

elpenguino: My gripe is seeing the little blue baggie dumped. I often see them at the start of walking and bike tracks. The owner has done half the act where people were watching and then dropped the goods the moment they're out of sight.

It's not always dumping. It is a common practice in some areas dog owners leave those bags by the side of a track and pick them up on the way back along the same track.

Because? Apparently they don't want to carry poo any longer than necessary. Anyway that whole thing does need some marketing solution.

No doubt some people do get distracted or miss it on the way back despite good intentions. Personally I dislike seeing those bags regardless of how long they are there.

Sure, I was referring to use around the house, for industrial use you'd want something a bit more rigorous.

Even just the DC/DC converter on the input, regardless of the connection, is great, you don't have to worry about voltage drop at the end of a long run because it'll sort out what's needed from whatever gets there.  If a $5 Chinese remote sensor can include a DC/DC converter alongside the sensor and control system that does the actual work, why does a > $100 Raspberry Pi need a precisely regulated 5V supply?

Is this still the annoy thread?  Ah, yep, all good.

Self service supermarket check outs that ask you if you want a receipt; you select NO; the voice says "Thank you for shopping. Please take your shopping and your receipt.".

It can't be that difficult to not say "and your receipt" if you haven't been given one.

May be a niche UK thing but it grinds my gears every time.

Hah, we apparently can't even make text not say "1 minutes remaining" so good luck convincing them to record two voice lines!

People who park their cars on destination chargers over night.  Just bugs me that people buy a $60k+ EV and will drive to the free charger, plug in, then get picked up by their wife/girlfriend (in a petrol car for the example I saw) and leave the car over night in Mitre10s car park, all to save $5?

And then there are the people who queue up during the day to use that same charger :-)

Auckland Transport. My in-laws took my kids out this morning to take the train into town. Guess what? No trains running all weekend. This is despite weeks of shut-downs every summer...

I had lots of plans to be productive today with no wife and kids, but I had both a C19 Booster and a Tetanus Booster and woke today feeling like someone rubbed sand in my eyes and all my joints.

I'm sitting here with my brain racing with all the things I want to do and I don't feel up to doing any of it. It's a special kind of unhappiness!

The "No" in "Auckland Transport" is silent.

You know your train service is dire when Italian trains are more reliable than your ones are.

One of the best comments I've seen all year.

The US is dealing with this at the moment, in particular people who hog the charger to get the last 10-20% charge and prevent others from using it, by charging (groan) penalty rates over 80% charge. We could do the same here if it's a big problem.

After thinking my trusty old Brother HL-2140 printer was finally expiring, I eventually realised that the Raspberry Pi Zero 2w I was using to make it networkable was actually the issue and was no longer connecting reliably to Wi-Fi. A rebuilt Raspberry PI OS made no difference, so figured I'd just grab another from PB Tech. Turns out new stock is 5 weeks away.

I've had my HL-2140 for that long I can't remember how old it is! And just keeps going and going. I banged my head for a bit trying to install 64 bit pi os drivers, but in the end I just took the easy path and shared via mac sitting idle.

Along the same lines, discovering that Epson apparently no longer makes the ink cartridges for my printer.
So, despite the many warnings, I now have to use non genuine ink for the first time. They even have chips in the cartridges to try and prevent non genuine ones.

Talk about planned EoL.
Printer is still perfectly good otherwise with photo quality output on the right paper which I have plenty of.
