geoffwnz: Along the same lines, discovering that Epson apparently no longer makes the ink cartridges for my printer.
So, despite the many warnings, I now have to use non genuine ink for the first time. They even have chips in the cartridges to try and prevent non genuine ones.

Talk about planned EoL.
Printer is still perfectly good otherwise with photo quality output on the right paper which I have plenty of.

If it's that old the compatible ink will probably have a chip that works.

Auckland Transport. My in-laws took my kids out this morning to take the train into town. Guess what? No trains running all weekend. This is despite weeks of shut-downs every summer...

The "No" in "Auckland Transport" is silent.

You know your train service is dire when Italian trains are more reliable than your ones are.

LOL - just returned from cycle touring in Italy and had an interesting and annoying issue with a ferry on a lake.  It was shown on the timetable as accepting bicycles, with a small tag that they might be refused if they're likely to cause a safety issue - one assumes if the ferry is totally full.  I went to book tickets for the next day, and was told that the captain of that sailing is difficult, doesn't like bikes so will refuse us = no-go that day.  At least they told us, and that gave us time to make alternative plans (a 30km cycle to another port that had a proper car ferry, then another 20km from where the car ferry docked to where we were staying further along the lake).  it would have been a real bugger if we'd turned up on the day expecting to get aboard, as it was a once-a-day sailing at midday, which would have left things pretty tight getting to the other port, across the lake, and to our destination at a reasonable hour.  As for the rest of Italy - great place / fantastic trip, but just because something says it's open doesn't mean it'll be open, so you need to be prepared for surprises.

IME the compatible ink is no match on genuine for photo printing needs on nice paper.

Part of the reason why these days I copy e-tickets to my phone & show them at the venue, instead of printing them out.

Not all alternative ink is cheap. If Epson no longer make ink for older printers you either use something like https://www.vermontphotoinkjet.com/conecolor-inks or buy another printer.

Yep, will find out the answer to both of those when the current set of cartridges run out.

I have my doubts that a full set of "compatible" cartridges costing the same as any one genuine item will be even close to as good on the printouts.  Assuming they even work at all.

Probably sufficient quality for printing things like emails of course maps that are relatively low res anyway.  Thankfully don't print many photos now.  But I suspect a new printer is in my future.

What printer is it? It appears that Epson are simplifying cartridge production for some printers by deleting the chip. The new carts will have different numbers and the printer will need a firmware change. That's more than I want to know about Epson, over to you.

Artisan 725.

I'll do some research on what you've mentioned and see if anything comes up.  Thanks.  :-)

If you want a copy of a Death Certificate, you can order a copy from NZ Births, Deaths and Marriages for $33. You need to provide the deceased’s full name and date of death. This sounds fair enough.

However, in this case, my Dad died about 20 years ago - but unfortunately no-one in the family has the certificate and no-one remembers exactly what date it was. We want the Certificate purely for the sake of completeness in our family records - to show us the date. However we can’t get the Cert without knowing the date.

Talk about Catch 22. I’m sure many Certificates are required in this sort of situation - especially for legal purposes.

Is there a grave somewhere with the date on it?

Unfortunately not.

NZH deaths notices section is run by an outfit called Legacy. I remember putting the obituary notice on there at the time. Legacy have a search function which purports to show results for 'all time' if you provide the name and town/city. The search seems particularly useless.

Have you tried searching BDM site? Assuming your father was born 80+ years ago.

Edit We found a younger friend's details in the Council cemetery records.

No it is also how long ago person was born. I can search my mother's death in 1998 because she was born in 1925. I couldn't search our friend who was born in 1974 but knowing she lived in Whanganui searching their council cemetery records gave date of death.

Thanks for the tip - didn’t know you could do that. I deleted my last post because I realised it was wrong.

Maybe just me but I find their website a bit confusing and ambiguous. e.g. they say you need a Registration Number to be able to search but I’m having trouble understanding what they mean by that. I have sent them an email seeking clarification - auto acknowledgement says they will reply within three days - which sounds pretty good.

Searching BDM gives the DOB and registration number of the death record that you pay to get but not the actual date of death.
