First three episodes of Resident Alien

Alan Tudyk never fails to please.

It was good to see him back with Nathan Fillion in a recent late night episode of The Rookie

The Queen's Gambit (Netflix) - 8/10

As good as you've probably already read.  For those who haven't heard anything about it, this is a great short series (7 episodes) about a girl - Beth Harmon - who is taken in to an orphanage after her mother dies, and learns to play chess.  She quickly becomes a prodigy, and the series follows her progress through to the world championship.  It's set mostly in the 60s, and offers a light take on some contemporary issues of sexism and racism, but it's mostly about the character development of Harmon and the chess.  Chess has never really been my thing, but much the same way that shows and movies can take something like poker and fill it with excitement and tension, they do the same with chess.  You don't really need to know anything about chess strategy to enjoy the thrill of watching Beth learn and grow as a chess player.

But the show is mostly about Beth's character arc and the demons she's battling.  It's a nice, solid character drama.  Anya Taylor-Joy is fantastic in the lead, and supported by solid performances from the rest of the cast.  The story is nicely self-contained - no need for a sequel, though it could go on if it wanted to - and was very enjoyable to watch.

Latest episode of The Rookie (Nathan Fillion as an older gent - slightly younger than I, starting his LA Police career).

Was a good episode, but ended too easily and left me feeling like he just got away with it too easily...too many loose ends and a bit sloppy from the writers.

The only problem I am beginning to have is that the sheriff, played by Corey Reynolds, is really beginning to annoy me - a lot.

The Crew - Netflix

Comedy about the crew of a struggling Nascar racing team.

I don't mind it. It's not hilarious by any means, but I am enjoying some elements of it, the character development.

I'll be watching a few more episodes to see which direction it heads.

Lupin, on Netflix. Interesting story, a bit predictable but not bad. Give it a 6.5/10.

We just watched that too.

I'd suggest perhaps holding off watching S1 until S2 is closer to being released.  The end of S1E5 leaves things hanging.

I quite enjoyed Lupin.

The Serpent on BBC iPlayer (coming to Netflix later in the year) 8/10

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Serpent_(TV_series)

It is based on the crimes of serial killer Charles Sobhraj, who murdered young tourists between 1975–1976.

Only watched the first two episodes so far but its well written and really gripping watching.

Is that guy still a rookie? I feel like he's been a rookie for several years now, isn't it time he was promoted? 😕

I think he's now qualified but still a rookie (technically).

They still drive around with a TO, so assume they're not yet out of the apprenticeship. Funny, because I read the other day that it doesn't take that long to qualify as a cop in the US (but I guess that varies from State to State).

EDIT: 6-9 months at the Academy and then 1 year of probation on duty thereafter. (from the LAPD website)

S1 continues with episodes 6 to 10. They were filmed concurrently with the first five and now it's just the wait for Netflix to release them.

Lois and Superman. So far it's kinda interesting, quite a bit of action, but also quite EMO. A novel approach to the L&C story I guess. I think I am going to find some characters grating over time.

My wife commented Lois looks like the PM which kind ruined it for me LOL.

I see The Terror is available on a certain state broadcaster from the other side of the planet.

Been continuing with Resident Alien (TVNZ On Demand), which is fun and funny. I'll carry on with that one.

Also watched the penultimate episode of WandaVision last week on Disney+ - it's getting to the Nitty Gritty and one would hope that the final episode this week is at least 2 hours long to properly wrap it up instead of rushing to a conclusion with a cliffhanger.

I've also watched the 5th episode of The Mandalorian season 2. I'm struggling a bit with that one, to be honest. It's been a bit slow and "samey" for my liking this season.

I lost interest in The Man In The High Castle season 3 (Prime Video)...it just doesn't seem to be getting anywhere and frankly I'm a little lost (as i just haven't been paying attention).
