Spending ages search for the fourth hex nut on a sensor array that either fell down somewhere or rolled away or I was holding it and put it down while getting other stuff, then remembering that this particular config has a tripod arrangement and there was never a fourth hex nut in the first place.

What really really annoys me is that no single brand of smoke detector is compatible with the mounting bracket of any other brand!

Argh, yes. Exactly the sort of thing that "should" be standardised, but isn't.

Rather than screwing the base to the ceiling you can get magnetic quick mounts. New detector, just transfer the stick on disc.

And their techs went to a great deal of trouble to make sure that was the case.

Edited to add: Before you click on it, the link isn't to smoke detector tech but a discussion of the lock-in effect, which is what the smoke detector vendors would have been aiming for.

Well, they blew it. I never remember what brand I had. All it does is piss me off.

I tried to do a like-for-like replacement, only to find that I couldn't get that model any more.

Also annoyingly, the one I ended up with chews through batteries around three times as quickly as the rest of the ones in the house.

some smoke detectors have adapter plates available for this.

Edit - actually I might have that wrong.  The adapter plates I had seen were for old vs new withing the same brand.

When it rains it pours.
Discovered that the issue with the washing machine we had been having was easily solved by fitting new hoses.
$50 later, we're back up and running and everyone is happy.

Two days later the motherboard is fried.

New washing machine purchase required!

Thankfully it's "black friday sale" season and we got $500 off a new front loader (LG thing with "Ai" and load sensing etc) and we've been able to continue doing laundry like proper humans.

It was money we didn't have and didn't want to spend, but it is what it is and next up it's Christmas.

I used a spare one nz travel SIM as a backup data bearer while in a region of NZ that Spark doesn't serve. Now my samsung Internet browser default home page is vodafone.co.nz.
So that's two annoyances in one, they've messed with my browser settings without notification or permission, and they're too useless to even do it properly so that it points to their correct homepage.

Similar story: The tech visits to replace the timer in our clothes dryer and leaves around 12 PM. At 2 PM, we need to start some washing, and the washing machine stops halfway through the cycle.

Call tech again. He initially thought it was the dryer.

He comes a few days later (the earliest available time) and checks the washing machine. The motherboard is gone.

The machine did well for 25 years.

After a week of checking prices and talking to friends, we bought a front-loading Miele.

Again, money we were not thinking of spending just before Christmas.

...or the cost-of-living crisis.  Rubbish disposal is expensive and going up like most other things.  Could be these folks decided they can no longer afford it.
