@smcc Stuff are correct on this occasion. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tenterhook It's the appropriate use of the word.

smcc: Queensland on tenterhooks after four-year-old girl tests positive to COVID-19

What the ... is a Tenterhook? a tenderhook in a field? I am no English Master but these people use words for a living.

"Tenterhooks or tenter hooks are hooked nails in a device called a tenter. Tenters were wooden frames which were used as far back as the 14th century in the process of making woollen cloth. The phrase "on tenterhooks" has become a metaphor for nervous anticipation."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tenterhook

100% correct usage

Im pretty sure the vet didn't use bovine TB to kill the Alpaca

I was also confused. How do you use TB to kill an alpaca? Seems a random method.

In the old days, showing my age, it was done along these lines:

Alpaca with TB killed by vet

These days it's more:

A vet met an alpaca. You won't believe what happened next.

If you hear something wrong often enough you might think that's the right way.

You should save that thought for prosperity.

I correct my kids but I don't have the nerve to do the same to my boss. Every time he says prosperity I get a funny feeling inside. 😃

To say that you'd have to be some kind of a**hole.

Tenterhooks are literally "tent" hooks used to stretch out fabric. Over many centuries, fabrics made from natural fibres have been stretched when they are made because otherwise they become shrunken and misshapen.

That reminds me of an old story, possibly an urban myth, about when the Rolling Stones first came to NZ in the 1960’s and visited Invercargill. Arriving in the city centre by taxi, Mick Jagger allegedly said “Jeez, this place must be the a**hole of the Earth”.

Quick as a flash, the taxi driver replied “Yeah, and you’re just passing through”.

EDIT: Fact Check: Seems part of the story is true. The taxi driver is an invention - but why let that get in the way of a ‘passable’ joke.

NZH today: “Warriors CEO Cameron George has expressed disappointment in his player's on-field behaviour.”

Only one?? Wasn’t the whole team crap?

"How to make cocktails during lockdown"

I may be wrong, but I'm guessing the methodology is identical regardless of lockdown....
