Handsomedan: After some pretty awful service from Specsavers, I finally got my new glasses today.

When I got them, they gave me a code for a survey and advised that if I complete the survey I can go in the draw for a $500 store credit.

The slip of paper with the code gave the crucial part: I can be in the draw for the credit if I rate them a 9 or 10. Otherwise I’m out of luck.

Yeah, you’re getting a 3

I usually try to get three pairs of glasses at once (one is prescription sun glasses). It's cheaper to get a flight overseas, take a few days vacation, get prescription glasses and return, than to buy from New Zealand.

Here's an annoyance.

https://www.reddit.com/r/auckland/comments/1hkc6l4/meanwhile_in_auckland_palestine_protesters_spend/

They apparently spent 12 hours making a sign and didn't spell "you're" correctly.

So frustrating to see. It's so simple.

The plethora of Apple Homepod minis being advertised on TradeMe for more than the price direct from Apple.

The $289 offering really takes the cake. $179 RRP from Apple with free delivery.

Had the crappy 12V switchmode power supply in a bug zapper fail (bad capacitor) and decided to replace it with a 12V Surplustronics "electronic transformer", IP44 rated, extended temperature range operation, slimline to fit inside the case, it was perfect, much better than what it was replacing, and available at zero notice before everything shuts down for Christmas.

However a voltage check on the output was indicating nothing at DC and nothing sensible at AC because the high-impedance meter wasn't loading it enough to sustain oscillation.  Turns out these things output an 80kHz pile of hash inside a 100Hz envelope once sufficiently loaded.

At least it was only $5, now wondering whether I should bodge up an external 12V supply to allow the bugs to be zapped while I wait for a proper replacement to arrive.

I said that I had bought short speaker cables. Guys, guys, the esoteric recommendations out there have no basis in physics. There is talk of the ‘skin effect’ (only occurs at very high frequencies), ‘sounding cables’, ... etc. - at fantasy prices, of course. I simply bought 5m metres of 2.5mm2 OFC (oxygen free copper) cable for €9 (1.80€ per metre) at the DIY store. In the hi-fi shop they wanted €14 per metre for the same quality! Beware, there are also more inferior CCA cables (copper clad aluminium) on the market. 😁

Yay it’s the last day before the holidays and here’s a list of things I could have organised months ago but now I’m going to run around like a headless chicken and share my problems with everyone around me! Yay! Oh what’s that? You can’t do it now and I’m expected to join the queue of others just like me?! Oh joy more ammunition for my shared problems!

It's my 25th wedding anniversary and it's Christmas eve.

That's annoying.

Who's stupid idea was it to get married on Xmas Eve?

I would hazard a guess that there really is only one guilty party though 🤔🤣

"Order now and get it by Christmas!". Ordered six days ago, not shipped yet, probably won't be here in time for Christmas.

NZ Post courier just delivered something next door, but nothing for me. Granted I don't know whether it was the right courier (sent via "Landmark" and I don't know who they use once it hits NZ) but it's not looking promising.

[Edit 27 Dec: It's not even in NZ yet!]

Heading away after work tonight and made the mistake of forgetting to get petrol yesterday so had to brave Pak n Save (Lower Hutt) at lunch time. Not the shop, just the petrol (located in the carpark) but what a nightmare getting into the carpark was. Amazing how many people leave the Xmas food shopping to Xmas Eve afternoon. I guess there's also the panic shoppers because the shop is going to be closed for 24 hours.

I went to Woolworths today (surprise surprise) to get a couple of last minute things we realised we needed.

My son also had a physio appointment next door, so I went back to the car and sat inside with the aircon on while I waited.
Someone stood behind my car and yelled abuse because I wasn't vacating my parking spot to their liking.

Is it a Woolworths carpark, or a shared one? Although theoretically you could have been waiting for another family member to finish shopping, so it wasn't right to be abused in either case.
