networkn: Disagree. Kyber Passes Road Markings and transition to and from buslanes are not well laid out, and it has been acknowledged by AT but they didn't do anything about it. Co-incidentally, it's their most profitable 'compliance' location.

If you think that's bad, take a look at this Mondrian the Christchurch council has created:

Anyone want to guess what you're supposed to do when you run into that?

Jase2985: It meets NZTA road design standards,

Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

Hey Neb, where is that?

It was from some story in Stuff that someone sent me a link to, let me see if I can find it again... ah, here it is, just before the bottom.  The article mentions a Madras St and Ferry Rd.

Here it is from above.

CCC either:

  • Asked Graham, the CCC storeman since 1976, if he had any left-over paint in his depot
  • Decide to celebrate the rainbow community with some road markings

I suspect the latter.  And if the intention is to slow all forms of traffic down then it's probably effective.

It seems to make a little more sense from above, as the brightly coloured bits are pedestrianised.

Problem is, when driving I rarely do it from a drone.

Handle9:

What do you suggest AT do about Kyber Pass while maintaining the functionality of the bus lanes?

Just because a road is confusing and not able to be made less confusing doesn't make it revenue gathering.

Like most other road issues it comes down to the rules should only apply to bad (other) drivers, not good (me) drivers.

That assumes it's impossible to make it less confusing, which I seriously doubt.

I guess the answer is they use some smart technology to determine when a case is intentional vs accidental, they could increase the thresholds for what generates a ticket, perhaps a warning for the first time.

But of course, there is more money in inaction.

Do you get a warning when you get snapped by a speed camera? no. Why should that be any different?

Road rules are pretty clear about your responsibilities, and there is no way you are in that lane without a concious decision or without seeing the signs/lane markings, so its a choice you have made. don't defend bad driving by impatient people. its like saying its ok to speed because there was no one around or i had to be somewhere.

Americanesque would be ‘purdy’.

You seem to be having a comphrehension problem. AT themselves have acknowledged the weakness in the design and the fact it's causing people to get tickets, and have failed to act upon that.

You can be in that lane because the layout isn't as clear as it could be. If you stay in that lane the whole way down, then sure.

They could quite easily ease the issue by simply increasing the threshold for a ticket from 50m to 100m for example.

There are ways to solve this if the will exists, of course, that would affect revenue clearly not their top priority.

As do you, you are skirting personal responsibility. The lanes are there to provide unimpeded transit for passenger service vehicles, carrying hundreds of people per hour and also taking hundreds/thousands of cars of the roads each day.

What can AT do to make it more obvious or clearer, though? you dont have any solutions. The total length of the buslane is 160m from Crowhurst to just before Broadway, there are 4x painted green sections on the road each 10-15m in legnth with buslane in white on them each has a buslane sign with the hours under it, There are broken white lane markings with green on their left for 1/2 the length of the lane, till it goes to solid while for the last half. What more do you want? a flashing sign? someone handing out brochures?
The secont from park to Crowhurst is also clear its a buslane as the lanes merge when the buslane starts.

You cant be in that lane (buslane) because the layout isnt clear, there is no possible way to be in the left lane unless you make a concious choice to be in that lane.

The threshold for tickets isn't set by AT its set by NZTA. If you increase it it just creates more blockages for buses. 50m is plenty to complete your manoeuvre, you just have to wait till that point, which people seem unwilling to do, hence them getting tickets.

Every bus and Tx lane gives out tickets, the T3 lane cameras on Queenstown road/Maunkau road paid for themselves in 3 months, why? its not cause there not enough signage or road markings. it's because people choose to use the lane when they are not supposed to.

You are making every excuse to avoid personal responsibility. A simple solution to not get a ticket is not to drive in the buslane. if you do get a ticket take it as a learning experiance as i have when i got my ticket. Im much more aware of the lanes now.

you could have flashing lights or what every and have the whole lane painted, but people will still get tickets

As I said, you are missing the point. Let's agree to disagree.
