kingdragonfly: I've been a Mighty Ape customer for years. When I joined years ago, their marketing department did a similar thing, adding me the their mailing lists.

Now it's much worse.

Note that added this statement to the credit card payment screen.

"By continuing you agree to the Mighty Ape Terms and Conditions and Privacy Policy and to receiving marketing communications from Mighty Ape."

They added me to 15 mailing lists, including Daily deals, and product announcements. This is contrary to New Zealand law.

Their marketing department had this response

"I apologise that you did not wish to sign up for the mailing list. This is communicated at the checkout (I've attached a screenshot of what this looks like for your convenience).

As such, by completing your purchases, you opted in to our mailing list."

Such bullshit response, and wrong to do it.

That response is worthy of an actual complaint - https://www.reportspam.co.nz/ - Also report spam in gmail/whatever since that will screw up their reputation and cause them additional hassles.

Reminds me of when Smiths City signed me up to a mailing list without my consent, and when I complained they came back with the non-apology "we're sorry you didn't find it useful".

Though I'm pretty good at selecting 95% of the marketing emails, clicking "mark read" and then deleting.  Occasionally one will catch my eye and get looked at.

It's pretty much at saturation point now where the sheer volume of marketing emails turns them all into the same blur.

I used to have a throwaway Gmail account which I abandoned a couple of years ago due to the volumes of trash, or "marketing emails" as they prefer to be called. I logged into it the other day just out of curiosity, and was gobsmacked at the volume of utter rubbish that is still being sent to it on a daily basis. I actually thought it was quite sad and pathetic to see all these marketing people shouting into a black hole as if they think I'm actually reading this nonsense.

These days I never give my real email address to anyone unless I really trust them. Everyone else gets a throwaway address that I can shut down when the nuisance emails start to flow.

Westpac hold music.  As well as being twice as loud as the menu audio, it sounds like it has been recorded from an AM car radio that is driving through hilly terrain on the edge of station coverage.  Is this a subtle way to make people drop from the queue?

I forgot about the whole "Sneaking the Outlook (new) onto Windows" thing.

Companies who want to maintain offline functionality, or On-Premises Exchange Servers may want to stick the "Classic" outlook.

Some businesses are concerned about the New Outlook's increased data collection and potential security vulnerabilities. The Classic Outlook, being a mature product, is perceived as more secure and reliable in this regard.

The New Outlook does include ads, but it depends on which version you're using and what kind of account you have.

Just looked on my PC, and yep, there is "new Outlook", along with classic Outlook. I was able to uninstall "new outlook" which did not affect classic outlook. You mileage may vary.

I understand this is the way to revert.

1) Open the New Outlook.

2) In the top right corner, look for the "New Outlook" toggle switch.

3) Turn off the toggle – it will say something like:

4) “Turn off the New Outlook”

5) You’ll be prompted with a confirmation dialog. Click "Switch Back".

6) Outlook will close, and the classic Outlook will reopen.

Companies still trying to save money like bandwidth costs what it did in the 90s with lossy compression on their voip calls. but yes, they dont want to talk to you and anything they can do to make you give up and submit a ticket online instead is a good thing.

Isn't that all hold music though?  Especially the communications companies like Spark and One NZ etc.

Ah yes, the continued enshittification if Mighty Ape. It used to be that if you pre-ordered something they wouldn't charge you until the product actually shipped. I noticed recently that they charge you as soon as you place the order. I'm sure the C-suite dwellers at MA all think these are great ideas to improve sales revenue but if they keep pissing off their customers it's going to have the opposite effect. How can they not see this?

I'm building some software for someone. I just sent a whopping two questions (numbered). Question 1 got a vague response, question 2 was ignored, but "can we get this done urgently please?"

My work machine, obviously centrally managed, now has "Microsoft Teams classic", "Microsoft Teams", and "Microsoft Teams (personal)", as well as "Outlook" and "Outlook (new)". And yet somehow, when I receive an email about something happening on Teams which needs my attention, the link opens in a web browser, which then just displays a page asking if I would like to open the link in Teams.

Enshittification at its finest.

"Outlook (new)" recently received an update that changed the name to "Outlook".
