I'm strongly against the porn filter being automatically applied to everyone, but your comments show a hideous lack of understanding.

Religious people strongly opposed to pornography or pre-marital sex etc are in no way automatically 'A-sexual' (sic).

You need to accept everything you wrote in your post is wrong and misguided.

Gossip and rumors and fiction, and people take it seriously. "Shortland street mentality" is a cancer in this country. Far more so than pornography, or even alcohol abuse.

Rather than fund shortland street, I'd love to see the government fund research into the destructive effects of shortland street on society. Then I could spout some statistics, instead of making assertions I can't prove.

I accidentally clicked a big NSFW ad at the bottom of this page (geekzone is the only website I allow adverts on) and was thinking "OMG" it is possible to accidentally find porn on the internet.... until it turned out to be a link to the geekzone jobs page.

When I was younger there weren't so many free porn sites around so I got my porn fix from p2p file sharing services like Kazaa/bearshare/Morpheus etc. Would an ISP based filter be able to stop this too without rendering the services useless?

Oh, I don't think they need to do that - we all have one in our pockets...

But oppression, spying, and so on doesn't need to go to those extremes before it's bad for us. Just what they are proposing - having the power to read our communications, bank accounts, etc everything is too much already.

And yes, it's about time we stood up for our rights. John Key's regime needs to end. I've heard a lot of talk around here about how "Aunty Helen" was too controlling and how National would have been better. ... Those voices are strangely quiet now.

the problem with the type of filters proposed in the UK is that they always block more then what people think they block, and their are multiple examples of this including Australia, and for some even work places, imagine you work in a health based organization and you search for the term breast cancer and it comes up been blocked because of the word breast (and their have been occurrences of this actually happening, in public libraries)

the uk porposed filter has already been found that their is a very high chance that it will block the following:

? pornography
? violent material
? extremist and terrorist related content
? anorexia and eating disorder websites
? suicide related websites
? alcohol
? smoking
? web forums
? esoteric material
? web blocking circumvention tools

we should be concerned their needs to be oversight on what is blocked and why, and these lists needs to be verified. Most of the stuff listed above could be simply part of a free speech.

and as for those saying they should block to protect the kids, well sorry but the internet is not a tool for children without active supervision and education.
and as for blocking pornography imagine it starting fairly straight forward and blocking extreme sexual acts/nudity but then as time goes by it then expands to include full nudity to just a female breast been shown, and then later on you get a change of govt and they expand the filter even further that any female skin showing is pornography. definitions of pornography can shift with political influence and monetary influence; sites that contravene NZ censorship laws you could argue should be blocked, but that is a separate debate

Fundamentally, the problem with ISP-level filtering for (anything) is it compromises the end-to-end principle.
