Well id hate to think what they did wrong in Napier in 1931..

 

I was looking further into it on wikipedia and noted this:

 

"The local landscape changed dramatically, with the coastal areas around Napier being lifted by around two metres.[5] The most noticeable land change was the uplifting of some 40 km² of sea-bed to become dry land. This included Ahuriri Lagoon, which was lifted more than 2.7 metres[5] and resulted in draining 2230 hectares of the lagoon. Today, this area is the location of Hawkes Bay Airport, housing and industrial developments and farmland."

 

Similar rise in sea bed levels.. Hmm the whole country is slowly raising itself :)

 

How many mountain ranges are created. I cant recall the figure, but if mountains never eroded, broke up with ice, etc they would be massively tall. But they break up, Mt Cook years ago the recent example. Himalayas are growing as the Indian plate is still pushing into the Eurasian plate.

Spark have west coast fibre that runs from Riccaton to St Arnold. If that broke then it would be bad for the south island.

He said that mountains have moved, literally. So I take that as aside form shifting the slip rubble, it may be awkward to feed a road in some places where the mountain is nearer the coast? Given that many parts of SH1 are on the coast. And or shifting so much of the mountain, and stabilising it. 

The earthquake has been revised upwards to 7.8 now.

It's funny how USGS had reported the quake as a 7.8 straight away. Maybe it was just a lucky guess.

Yep the SI local only internet. I'm sure a microwave link could be put in place. But that would be a significant reduction in capacity.

I wonder what the capacity of Vodafone's Aqualink cable is? I see the ISPs are working together to hook it up to Kaikoura to help restore service to the area.

Maybe Chorus needs their own submarine cable similar to Vodafone's running up the coast to prevent this happening again?

The quakes seemed to of created a new problem, the mortgage broker we are dealing with says all insurance companies have puts the brakes on offering new house policies on houses in the wellington region. Could last weeks to months, not ideal :(

Ha ha! Just imagine how huge we will be in 3 million years! And just how good we will then have to be to 'punch above our weight'!

USGS have always been quicker with more accurate mag for all of our major quakes I've seen.

(I feed the Quake Catcher Network which has been bounced around several US Universities depending on funding - now at University of Southern California)

Even the QCN had a reasonably accurate mag / location within about 2 minutes - years before GEONET.

OK.  That's a problem.  One of the reasons that they do this is to prevent people who didn't have insurance from taking out policies after damage had occurred, then claiming that the damage happened after the policy was in place, it was usually possible in Chch to work a deal with the vendor's existing insurer to "transfer" (not really a transfer as it's a completely new policy) insurance to the buyer.

It could also be that they've had a word from their offshore reinsurers to not write new policies, as the reinsurers don't want to increase their exposure.
