Why can't private golf courses be made to offer public days or hours as a way of sharing a limited resource?

The difficulty in Auckland in particular, is that many of the clubs post Covid are technically full. If you offer tee times to the public you are likely to annoy those that are paying premium to be a member. Where I play doesn't let the public on before midday, not because they're being nasty, but purely because it's absolutely chokka with members and in winter anything after midday, you'll struggle to finish eighteen holes.

Just to reiterate, this example isn't in reference to Takapuna. That's an almost unique situation in the country.

I wonder why the council don't extend the overflow wetland further south under Northcote Road, I mean there's some more open space there!!

If we set aside the elitist thing for now, if you had to decide - would you pick flooding or golf ?

I would pick not building in a known flood plain. Red sticker the whole valley.

So you’d be good with your rates going up by 500% to pay for that?

Just had the power go out while in the bath! Absolute zero visibility everything is black. The one room of the house where I don't have a torch. Not really an annoyance, more of an interesting experience. I was able to feel my way to a room with a torch and laptop. Still pitch black.

Thinking of getting the Harvey 4K from Amazon US. Was $21 plus postage, now $32 with 'free' postage.

Those are the times you realise how unprepared we mostly are for a long term blackout or disaster that strikes in the night. We take so much for granted. Even worse when there’s no moonlight because of bad weather.

It must have been very unnerving for you although the cats would have been amused.

Although I realised almost immediately that it was just a power failure, which does happen out here from time to time, for a brief moment I did experience what it must feel like to suddenly go blind. My eyes were closed from the shampoo and when I opened them nothing was there. Very uncomfortable. Then I had to make my way by feel to the room where a torch was. I was completely disoriented in the dark and I couldn't figure out what was where even though I know the room well. It was an interesting experience.

A few years ago Herself bought 4 cheap solar lights to put by the drive. They were useless there but live on scattered through the house where they do put out enough light to walk around. I just put the batteries in a charger every couple of weeks rather than leave it to the sun.

Kinda risky when you factor in the slippery fall risk. Public buildings have emergency lighting. In this day and age of reasonably priced LED light fixtures you'd think there'd be a market to pay a few dollars more for domestic lights that stay on with low power emergency lighting in a power cut?

I have got some of those elsewhere in the house. How often do you expect the lights to go out while you are in the bath? I will now place a torch within reach.

All of this talk of blackouts made me think...but because of the last few years of weather events, I actually know exactly where the torches and lanterns are, as they are there specifically for this purpose - I can get around our house pretty well in the dark, as it's been our home now for over 25 years.

I still wouldn't like opening my eyes and having continuing darkness, unexpectedly. I think that would freak me out - even if only for a moment.

Yeah, I can imagine. I had a power failure when I was in the shower once. I shower in the morning, so there was pale sunlight, but it was still freaky to open my eyes and find it darker than it should have been. If it was pitch black then that would likely be terrifying.

Kinda makes me appreciate that my current Garmin watch has a built in torch.  Since I wear it 24/7, including in the shower, I always have a nearby light source.

But it's always getting caught out that reminds us to prepare better.
