Yet another use for duct tape: when trying to draw a new cable into a bottleneck using the old cable as the draw, linking the two together almost always creates a lump that can hang up if the passage is really tight. I have run up against this many times in the past.

Instead, just place the two cables end to end on a piece of duct tape, then roll the tape tightly around them. This creates a non-bulging join and the tape will hold the cables surprisingly well. I have been able to successfully pull several using this trick. Duct tape is a truly magical thing.

Nice looking pup, made me smile. Friend is fretting today about needing to put theirs to sleep so it was nice to see a young healthy pup.

That's still relying on the strength of the tape hold on shiny plastic to keep them together... I'd go with using staples made of paper clips through the sleeves and then wrap a bit of tape around the join.

Depends on how hard the pull is, I guess, I have done this several times without problem. The tape sticks to insulation really well.

Yep, my brother's used that technique for years and it seems to work fine.

I tried a recommended method to pull ropes, using some thin strong cord to tie a clove hitch a few cm from the end, then a half hitch at the end of both ropes, wrap some tape around the join.  This to pull a new halyard up a mast.  Didn't work - the rope plus tape was too big to go through the sheave block, the knots worked but the cord (dyneema - very strong) broke because I yanked too hard rather than giving up when I knew I was beaten, the rope fell down inside the mast, what could have been a 5 minute job still turned into several hours mucking around. (On a small yacht - so easier to take the mast down than risk death being winched up) Never count on the easy way working. Sod's law applies.

Something that made me smile this weekend just gone: Getting up to the forest with my kids on our mountain bikes (OK - just one rode and the other - in a full-arm cast and sling - ran around like a loon, having a great time).

Was really busy, but everyone was keeping a good distance and seemed pretty darn happy to be out and about.

I just loved being able to really get amongst it again after a couple of months of just endlessly riding a loop around the neighbourhood.

The cost is low enough to make you smile but do you still have the equipment to pull one off !?

Stuff article but this is the Smile thread

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/126742915/boy-4-dials-111-invites-police-to-see-his-toys

From years ago at our place:

The phone rings first thing this morning, before coffee had kicked in.

Me: Hello?

Caller: Hello, this is the police. Do you have a small child, maybe 3-4 years old?

Me: .... Um. Yes...?

Caller: We received a call a few minutes ago from this number. We heard a small child talking. We asked if there was an adult present, but he decided to tell us about Donkey Kong instead. He didn't want to get an adult.

Me: ...

Caller: So if there is no problem, can we recall the police car that we have already dispatched to your house?

Me: Um. Yes. <small voice> Sorry...

Note to self: Put the phone on a higher shelf.

Many years ago when I had an early Nokia with real buttons I caught my puppy chewing on my phone. 15mins later and a taxi turns up at the front door. He managed to dial the local taxi company and as I’d had a business account with them they had my address on file and just dispatched a taxi even though all they could here on the phone was a slobbering dog.

Hope they're not right in the front because the cost might "really make you smile" - but the the loss might really spoil that smile. πŸ˜€
