Just saw The Hateful 8, the new Tarantino movie. I made a point to see at the Arclight Hollywood in a Roadshow presention. This was a special presentation in UltraPanavision 70 with an overture, intermission and booklet given out.

The movie itself was about 3 hours long. While set in the old west, it played more like an Agatha Chrstie murder mystery but with the manadatory Tarantino graphic violence. But diagloue was great and witty and I never felt the movie lagged.

Seeing it in UltraPanavision 70 in a 2.79:1 aspect ratio was a revelation. It's a pity no cinema in NZ will show it that way as there are apparently no 70mm projectors around now. Maybe Peter Jackson could help out but he's more into his 48fps digital stuff now.

Interesting you mention that. I was wondering the same thing the other day and was looking at whether The Embassy in Wellington has 70mm. I couldn't find anything official but a forum comment somewhere said that part of the renovations a few years ago included a 70mm projector. Can anyone confirm/deny this?

Sicario: A gritty thriller/action/spy story. Not for the faint-hearted. Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin & Benicio Del Toro make a great cast. A well deserved 8/10.

The Martian: Avoided this one for some reason. Wish I hadn't. 9/10...Matt Damon nailed this one.

The Ridiculous 6: Makes Dumb & Dumber look like an intellectual drama. The title says it all really. 4/10 for a few chuckles but please remember to park your brain at the door on the way in.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

"The Imposter" on Netflix - documentary/true story with actors playing some of the parts. Intriguing and incredible - if you didn't know it was a true story you would turn it off as ridiculous.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

The movie was filmed in UltraPanavision 70. So even if you have 70millimeter Panavision would loan you a lens to show the movie and you would have to remask your screen to allow for the 2.76:1 aspect ratio. Not sure the embassy would want to go to all that trouble when they would prefer to be playing Star Wars.

First new movie I've watched this year was Leonardo DeCaprio in The Revenant.

It was a really good movie lots of nice scenery but not for the faint hearted. A lot of graphic violence and one very brutal bear attack. The only negative was about 30-40 minutes before the end I started to feel like I've seen it all before. Not sure if it was just a bit similar to the ending of another movie I'd seen or just some deja-vu I was experiencing.

Overall a great movie and I'd give it a solid 9 out of 10.

Agree. Sicario is a great movie... prompted me to go back and revisit Villeneuve's previous works ... really enjoyed Incendies from 2010. Not sure how I missed that the first time around

Watched Sherlock - The Abominable Bride. I have been a huge Sherlock fan since childhood and absolutely in awe of how Jeremy Brett had portrayed the role. Never liked the Robert Downey Jr one but Benedict Cumberbatch as present day Sherlock has been mighty impressive.

Thoroughly enjoyed the movie, specially the good old Victorian age Sherlock (felt like he is back to his home). It was fast, fun, flashy and fantastic. The best thing they did was to relate the two eras. Recommended watch

Wifey 'made' me watch Prestige last night. Was a bit hard getting into, but in the end I thought it was a pretty brilliant movie! Certainly didn't see a lot of it coming

Yes absolutely!! I am a relatively new found Sherlock fan but I loved this special. It was well paced (unlike some where you end up checking your watch) and I did enjoy Cumberbatch's performance. Would definitely recommend it as well.

Making a Murderer

If you have Netflix you've probably scrolled past it by now. If you listened to the first season of Serial (podcast) then I recommend you watch this. I haven't watched "The Jinx" but apparently it's a similar style to that also.

I don't want to say too much, and I can't post any links (I'm new). Check out the trailer.

By the way, it's a documentary series (10 episodes), but you could watch it as a 10 hour movie ; )

great film before nolan went all batty, inner.outer spacey and lost the plot.

Watched It Follows last night wasn't too bad but fell a lot into why are they doing that when it's obvious it's not going to work out well. 7 out of 10.
