USGS have always been quicker with more accurate mag for all of our major quakes I've seen.

(I feed the Quake Catcher Network which has been bounced around several US Universities depending on funding - now at University of Southern California)

Even the QCN had a reasonably accurate mag / location within about 2 minutes - years before GEONET.

I'm watching John Campbell on RNZ. He said that it had been revised up to 7.8. Unsure if that's official.

What the Trump episode has reminded me is never to underestimate the power of these despicable lie merchants. We started out (at least I did) regarding Trump as a clown and a buffoon. People like this are genuinely harmful and not to be dismissed too lightly. That is the lesson of history. I don't know why some people are mesmerised by snakes like Tamaki, but as long as they are prepared to follow him and his ilk into the abyss, we are all at risk.

I agree that USGS has tended to give a more accurate initial estimate of magnitude, but a poorer accuracy for location. I guess that's due to using more distant instruments.

It was a complex quake which fractured on at least 4 different faults simultaneously/consecutively.

USGS and GNS both initially estimated M7.5. GNS first review, they downgraded it to 6.6. USGS then upgraded it to 7.8, then GNS went back up to 7.5.

The email I got from a friend just out of Baltimore, sent it at 5pm NZ time on the 14th. He an EQ enthusiast, so I gave him links to Stuff and news hub for local detail, pics, etc. His link was USGS that he gave me. We see these variations, which seems odd as although they may use different sensors, surely the available information is free for all of these USGS/GeoNet operations?

Couldnt confirm if this is live data but it would suggest there is an issue up the east coast as i do remember that being a full run.

Spark have west coast fibre that runs from Riccaton to St Arnold. If that broke then it would be bad for the south island.

Yep the SI local only internet. I'm sure a microwave link could be put in place. But that would be a significant reduction in capacity.

I wonder what the capacity of Vodafone's Aqualink cable is? I see the ISPs are working together to hook it up to Kaikoura to help restore service to the area.

Maybe Chorus needs their own submarine cable similar to Vodafone's running up the coast to prevent this happening again?

Found this just now. Seems it's just fortunate it lands in Kaikoura since I would guess the terrestrial link to Oara may have issues.

I would suspect Transpower would have deeper pockets to have an additional nationwide capacity due to the non-trivial expense. I know Spark have diversity from Nelson to Levin and a path along the undersea power cable.

Since the South Island has sub 600k people and is a larger island, the business case to have a 4th diversity Christchurch to North island would be non-trivial and not a huge customer demand due to existing Vodafone & Spark cables.

A few years ago when we drove through Molesworth Station FX Networks were putting in a fibre link Blenheim-Christchurch beside that road. Was that completed?

The quakes seemed to of created a new problem, the mortgage broker we are dealing with says all insurance companies have puts the brakes on offering new house policies on houses in the wellington region. Could last weeks to months, not ideal :(

OK. That's a problem. One of the reasons that they do this is to prevent people who didn't have insurance from taking out policies after damage had occurred, then claiming that the damage happened after the policy was in place, it was usually possible in Chch to work a deal with the vendor's existing insurer to "transfer" (not really a transfer as it's a completely new policy) insurance to the buyer.

It could also be that they've had a word from their offshore reinsurers to not write new policies, as the reinsurers don't want to increase their exposure.

Seems confirmed by IAG (State, NZI, Lumley and AMI) that there's a block on issuing new policies from the Rakaia River through to Masterton.

So it's not just Wgtn, but Chch, presumably Nelson / Blenheim, lower NI and all the small places between with a potential problem. Given that I expect most of the over (EQC) cap claims will be in the N Cant'y to Marlborough region, it's quite a dramatic action from the insurers in my opinion to extend the ban on new policies over such a wide area. I expect that the good people at Munich RE and Lloyds etc are calling the shots.

I expect it's the same with the other insurers. Could even be worse, as NZ Herald reports a home sale settlement delayed in Palmerston North.

If you're in the process of buying, then you'll need to talk to insurers, lawyer, and vendor urgently to get something sorted out. They also say they will not allow an increase to "sum insured" while the block is on, which could get a bit tricky for buyers if the house was under-insured, or if you own a house and are planning alterations.

The way it seemed to work here is that the insurer needed to get a building inspection report carried out by an LBP builder or registered engineer before they'd "transfer" the policy. They had fairly standard several pages of "check box & comment" form for the builder to fill out. Check items were visual - they didn't require detailed structural survey or tests, but at a guess still probably a couple of hours work for a builder. They might want more now though - in Chch EQC etc had carried out general ground condition surveys area by area so didn't usually require geotech reports (which are expensive). They might now.

The restriction didn't go away quickly either. I still had to go through submitting all the documentation etc 18 months ago - 4 years since the last damaging quake. Building / construction insurance premiums also went through the roof for a year or so, and took quite a while to drop back down.
