KiwiNZ: It baffles me that people are defending this clown. I suspect it's something to do with fear that their ill gotten toys maybe taken away

I'm not defending him, I just find it crazy that this country bends over backwards to the demands of the US.

And even allows the FBI to lead a NZ Police raid. We shouldn't keep letting them get away with it. It's just a repeat of the Bush/Blair partnership, except now it's Obama/Key

I think you'll find a lot of people are more annoyed at the amount of money wasted. The expensive helicopter entrance. Multiple police resources tied up for months investigating it.

I've only ever used Megaupload for legitimate APKs/source codes for my phone, so not a loss to me. Since I'll be able to find them elsewhere, and since I have an XDA account for most of my phone purposes.

I have moved across the ditch. Now residing in Melbourne as a VOIP/Video Technical Trainer/Engineer.

The USA has been pretty much reviled in NZ since WW2, and I doubt that's going to change much, plus of course NZ is in love with copying stuff.

Not sure what circles you mix in but the more people post anti-US statements in this thread the more it appears that is their issue and they still fail to grasp the basic concept of taking something that doesn't belong to you.

But its US property thats being stolen, and distrubuted around NZ and the rest of the world. Ever thought that maybe thats one of the reasons its the US thats involved and not say Zimbabwe?

Not much we can do about that though, it's just a fact of life.

The size difference between the two economies is massive. The US don't even need NZ as a trade partner and any FTA would probably make little difference to them in the big scheme of things.

A light hearted look at this...

The real criminals here is the Chrisco cartel that built that mansion in the first place from money conned out of poor NZ families to buy overpriced groceries :-)

It's like paying interest on your savings?

But Megaupload stole millions from the movie industry, it mean at the golden globes that had to sprinkle gold dust on there desert instead of being able to chew on whole gold bars... poor buggers

(I don't agree with piracy, but I also don't like Chrisco)

That's fine, if it's US property being stolen, then they should fork up the bill for our police/resources

Not just use the old:
"we might give you a FTA eventually..."
Which isn't that beneficial to NZ anyway.

Not compared to the FTA deals with China and South Korea, and the proposed India deal. Which actually benefit our country

We have 2 issues here,
Neither of which is fixable IMHO.

1/ Freedom of speech of the individual is rapidly degrading and this Style of smash and grab really rubs people up the wrong way when their forefathers fought for the freedom of this country and then a couple of weeks after flattening Lybia and a good percentage of the rest of the worlds oil/power they arrive here with a high powered display of force. We don't need that here.

2/ The 'You whistle a happy tune, I'll sue your socks off' mentality is about as good for NZ as it is for the garden. Put value into art before selling it rather than expecting people to buy it off the internet. The internet has created a culture expectant of free media. Work with it not against it.

We need to think differently about IP. And I agree you can't steal someone elses IP, it's wrong and it should be illegal, but boy this is great news for creative commons is it not. Anyway my point is you shouldn't do it. However, if you are big enough. (Youtube) ??? who's going to stop you.

The anti-americanisms you are perceiving are because many people out there find it more concerning that little old New Zealand is doing exactly what America wants at the cost of our own social contructs than they are concerned about whether he didn't return his library books. It's disgusting, immoral and libelous behavior especially by the media and FBI. Both organisations having been involved in more foul play than this dot com fellow. Rapists /Child Molesters/Murderers get better treatment and name suppression but dotcom who had a unlicenced gun (in a safe), was making deals with bands for distribution of their music ( something you wont hear much about) and made millions in charitable donations.

No one who is thinking is buying this.
and I'm glad I'm not the only one.

Sorry flattening Libya???? Pretty sure it was the Lybian people who had had enough of their dictator who got the ball rolling there.

Why is it that all posts supporting Dotcom tend to run along the same lines, playing down the criminality (not returning library books), glossing over the huge amount of profit he has personally gained from this enterprise, anti-american sentiment (Lybia, really???).

All it seems to show is a lack of reasonable argument.

well we have two choices: US tells our police to raid him like GTA 4 star wanted.

OR they come in the middle of the night with commandos and stealth helicopter and launch a raid ala geronimo :)

the cops can't catch everybody. ird can't catch everybody. your insurance can't investigate everybody. customs can't check everybody. doctors don't diagnose every meningitis. not everybody can get rich selling the same stuff.

but the cops will catch somebody ... usually somebody big ... but yeah i agree with the lack of bail ... the law is never 100% fair or so it seems

I must have missed something - would you please refer me to where he has been convicted of "...allowing and encouraging theft of items via MU."
