Maggie (2015) on Ozzy sky. 8/10

Came across this while channel surfing.

A variant on the zombie virus movies with Arnie as a father whose daughter catches the virus and slowly changes.

Knowing she is dying and eventually will turned into the classic zombie. Teenager dealing with the emotions of a terminal disease.

Underlying theme of how she should be rounded up and put into a "Quarantine" camp vrs parents hiding her to spend her last weeks with them.

No "violence" so interesting to see Arnie cast out of type.

Deadpool 8.5/10

Until recently, I knew almost nothing about the character of Deadpool other than what I saw in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which was a patently bad film. However, I didn't realise until long after the fact that the portrayal of Deadpool in that film was nothing like the comic character that fans knew and loved. It wasn't until I saw the trailer last year that I got what they meant, and I was pretty stoked for the film from that point. I'm happy to say that it didn't disappoint. It's easily one of the most fun films I've seen in a long time, and that's down to Ryan Reynolds portrayal of Deadpool.

I know Reynolds is one of those actors that divide people - you either love him or loathe him. I'm in the former camp, and I quite enjoy his flippant, sarcastic style of humour. As Hannibal King he was one of the best things about Blade: Trinity, and I even enjoyed him in Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place. Playing Deadpool feels like it's just a natural extension of his own persona, which made the film feel very comfortable and easy to watch.

Plot-wise, it's pretty simple and straightforward, and it's not hiding the real reason for it existing - gratuitous over-the-top violence, swearing, and jokes, all mixed in together with a lot of audience asides and in-jokes. It feels fresh and new, even though much of this has been done before in other films. But it's been a while since any film tried to pull them all together at once, and it works pretty well.

Despite this, there is some attempt at a plot and serious moments, and you can kind of glimpse a deeper tragic tale underneath the swagger. At times, this feels a little awkward and out of place, but it only lasts a moment before Deadpool is back and cracking wise. I didn't feel robbed for the lack of a stronger or more emotional plot, because the movie was so upfront about its raison d'etre.

There isn't much wrong with the film, and in fact my only concern is with the talk of sequels. There's no doubt that this film has done (and will keep doing) well at the box office, and has even been well-received critically. But I have my doubts that it can translate that success into a series or franchise. Much of its appeal lies in the gimmicks of the violence, jokes, and fourth-wall breaking, but that won't be enough next time around. There will be new characters to introduce for sure, but I'm skeptical that it has the stamina to last beyond a single film. Kick A** (really? that's a bad word banned on the forum?) and its poor sequel spring to mind here. I hope I'm wrong, but I'm struggling to see what will sustain it for future films.

The Martian - awesome, geeky, entertaining and engaging. Now, I so want to play at being Iron Man in space.

The Intern - OMG awful. 2/10. The two points are for having great actors.
The premise of the movie is okay. Robert de Niro was excellent. Nothing else positive can be said. The plot meanders all over the place; plot points fizzle and go nowhere; major storylines start but don't continue, as do some of the movies characters. The movie appeared, at the start, to be about the intern, a 70-year-old retiree that volunteers to intern at a tech startup. Then, as if retirement and ageism weren't enough to build on, the movie veered into parent/child relationships, stay-at-home father challenges, marital challenges of the working wife, conflict between stay-at-home mothers and working mothers, and monologues galore about gender issues. I got a half chuckle out of this comedy but don't recommend it to anyone unless you wish to study how to make comedic script-writing and production suck.

I haven't seen Deadpool yet, but need to get around to it. Reynolds made a bad Green Lantern movie even worse, but his flippant style could be a good match for Deadpool, who knows he's a fictional comic book character, and he frequently breaks the fourth wall in the comics.

Agreed, Green Lantern was complete rubbish, but I don't think Reynolds was completely to blame for that trainwreck. Deadpool is a perfect match for him, and I would agree with a statement I've seen floating around, that he is to Deadpool what Robert Downey Jr is to Iron Man.

Agreed with that rating. Watched it last weekend and enjoyed it for a Sunday movie out...

Great review, I agree with everything you've said. I LOVED 2 guys a girl and a pizza place so much. I was GUTTED when it ended. I also agree with Trinity

I think there is some room for Deadpool sequels, but it will take clever writing and a good basic storyline.

I think there is some room for Deadpool sequels, but it will take clever writing and a good basic storyline.

According to a few podcasts I've listened to in the last week, it will have the same 2 writers. They've already signed on.

They are pretty well known as comedy writers in the US.

They were picked to write the first after they pitched it to Ryan Reynolds.

Fingers crossed they can keep it up!

I was concerned that this would turn into a disaster - that they would take something treasured and also written for a different medium and mess it up. They didn't. Very funny and well done. Gambon as Private Godfrey was marvellous.

Of course, it was sadly sanitised to reflect the PC age in which we are forced to live but that is expected I suppose.

Really, really funny and creative - way better than the average superhero movie. Even if Stan Lee is beginning to look like Hugh Hefner...!

Bling free from Google Play . Well it's a kids movie basically but you can't pass up on free. . I have it 5 / 10

Don't see any sign of the 50% rentals in the Play Store for Kiwis. Looks like we could be shafted again as the Ozzys are getting it..

Snowpiercer - 7.5/10

Watched this on Netflix the other night. Heard it was a good film, and it delivered. The plot is an intriguing idea - mankind has screwed the planet by releasing a chemical to halt global warming, and ends up freezing the planet into virtual extinction. Doh! So everybody hops aboard the train of salvation, endlessly looping around the planet every 365 days.

It's got a great cast - Chris Evans (almost unrecognisable at the start), John Hurt, Tilda Swinton. The action is pretty good, and it maintains the tension as the revolution moves through the train. However, the idea starts to fall apart upon closer inspection. The train is a replica of a class system, with first class passengers at the front enjoying privileges that the "free-loading" passengers at the tail end don't. However, it's not really clear why they need the tail-end passengers at all - it's implied they do some manual labour but it doesn't seem to be essential for the welfare of the train. A train-based religion is touched upon, but it's not really delivered on. Overall, it's still an interesting idea but doesn't really fulfill it's potential. It reminds me of the Wool series of books by Hugh Howey which describes a similar idea, but I think is more fully-fledged (as is often the case with books vs films).

My wife and I watched the trailer for this at another movie we saw recently and she said "Weird choice, having the new Top Gear guy playing Captain Mainwairing - I didn't know he was an actor." I nearly spat frozen coke all over the people in the row in front.

Mad Max - Fury Road on Blu-ray from Fatso. 9/10 Really enjoyed this. Great action movie with amazing stunts and effects. My wife did not enjoy it as much as I because she found having the action so full on throughout the whole movie made it a little stressful.

Deadpool at Events queen st. 8/10 Enjoyed this one a lot. I knew it was going to be different and have lots of humour but I didn't know it was going to have such graphic violence. A nice surprise to have such a fun movie. My wife also enjoyed this one a lot. I found the picture quality was excellent on the screen we attended which I normally do not notice, I wondered if it was a new screen. Cinema 5 I think it was. I get really annoyed how some theatres like Albany Events do not replace/clean screens when the get damaged with chewing gum etc. Complaining to management resulted in nothing so I try and avoid the screens now.
