Geektastic:

(I’ve corrected for the nasty Americanism of ‘homicide’. )

homicide: Middle English: from Old French, from Latin homicidium, from homohomin- ‘man’.

Homicide has a wider meaning than murder, and includes manslaughter.

However it’s not generally used in countries that speak British English.

It is now. Just like every other Americanism that has polluted the well of our English.

Tāngarākau homocide

RNZ's typos are becoming a bad joke. Or do they mean that the victim was gay?

Once you get past the trial by newspaper in the UK you'll go to court charged under the Homicide Act 1957. They rushed that into law before you were born 😀

That may be so. However, in common usage it is murder or manslaughter depending upon whether there was premeditation, generally.

Is this true for all of modern Britain, or just the Queen, or just you and a few dying remnants?

I think the "Briasbane dad" has more to worry than his QANTAS points: "A Brisbane dad is warning others what to look out for after a cyber criminal stole 288,000 of his hard-earned frequent flyer points, tried to go on a holiday in his name – and then took a further $13,500 from his bank account."

This reporter is gonna get a real shock when she discovers her new landline is either already from "the internet" or about to go that way in the next year or two...

Could be moonwalking (a la Michael Jackson) and about to swivel and mount the steps?

For this reason fact checkers will say this is ‘mostly true’.

Not to mention that, even if it were a good old POTS service to the nearest telephone exchange, you aren't going to be able to make calls once the exchange runs out of diesel for its emergency generator.

Bring back the hand-crank and the operator with the patch-panel.

That's assuming it had a standby generator. Many smaller POTS exchanges only had batteries which were probably good for 24 to 48 hours. I can remember running an extension cable out the window from the power supply to a portable 230v generator on more than one occasion.

That operator and manual board still needed a local battery to work, eventually that would run flat. The hand crank was only for signalling.

What she really needs is a small UPS to run her ONT and modem. Then she will have pretty well the same redundancy as what she wants to get from her "landline".
