Rang a NZ outfit that spammed us with a marketing email and asked where they got all the email addresses from -“oh I had IT scan all my emails”

Thanks for confirming that — off to the DIA for you!

I have been spammed by NZ companies that I haven't dealt with for five to ten years. It appears they are pulling up old contact lists to create a spam database.

Yes, it's illegal, but they're doing it because they know DIA aren't enforcing the law.

It's possible the people who could enforce the law got the sack.

"I regret to say that we of the F.B.I. are powerless to act in cases of oral-genital intimacy, unless it has in some way obstructed interstate commerce." — J. Edgar Hoover

"Create a society that values material things above all else. Strip it of industry. Raise taxes for the poor and reduce them for the rich and for corporations. Prop up failed financial institutions with public money. Ask for more tax, while vastly reducing public services. Put adverts everywhere, regardless of people's ability to afford the things they advertise. Allow the cost of food and housing to eclipse people's ability to pay for them. Light blue touch paper." — Andrew Maxwell

gzt: Do you happen to have Apple Maps to try?
I did, actually as I rock both an iPhone and a Samsung.

Google maps is now showing a more correct path:

Apple maps showing I shouldn't have used the far left lane.  This was blocked at the time by that ute, and probably the issue all along if google maps was aware of the blockage:

Made it though the cyclone the other day with no issues. Today there's just some light/moderate rain out there and the power suddenly went off for 1 second, enough to knock out the computer, ONT, etc. Booted everything back up, then it went off again for another second. Boot up a second time, open Geekzone to have a whine about it and the laptop kernel panics (Mac/Unix version of BSOD). Not my night, perhaps!

It used to be a dollar (well, $0.99) when it first launched... so back to how it was originally.

They are planning on a subscription service for additional features. It's not the basic service.

‘WhatsApp Plus’ subscription launching soon with new features - 9to5Mac

I actually don't mind paying for digital services if it allows me to retain my privacy due to the service not needing to be funded by commercial data collection. The problem is that this particular service is operated by Meta, so the paid option will probably just give you access to a few new emojis without providing any privacy benefits.

H'mm, why on earth does Excel Online have an entirely separate date format that defaults to mm/dd/yyyy and why did the first search result tell me it was driven from my Microsoft Account locale setting. It's not, it's under "File / Options / Regional Settings".

Microsoft and date formats...ugh. In the Azure portal I sometimes get two different date formats on the same page...

Earache so bad that I am taking Tramadol and still in pain.
Doc has no clue what's going on so my needle-phobic self has to go have blood tests.

There's something uniquely and acutely painful about ear infections. I have surfer's ear and if it gets an infection which is not knocked on the head promptly the ear canal quickly blocks off preventing ear drop antibiotics from getting in there. Next thing my ENT guy is probing it and I'm hitting the roof!

Sounds like yours is not an obvious ear infection though. Had an ENT specialist look? I'm half deaf as well so I don't muck about when anything is affecting my ears.

No specialist just yet - just the GP (who is very good, I must admit).

Checked whether it could be teeth, as this can affect ears, with transferred pain, but they all seemed good, so bloods first (have to be sedated, so have to wait until the wife can take me to the lab whilst drugged up to the eyeballs), then if nothing presents itself as obvious, an ENT specialist, or possibly a visit to the dentist, to see if there is a less obvious tooth/jaw issue.

Two days later, another outage. This one was human error (they were working on a transformer and did something wrong). Of course I was in the toilet at the time, so got plunged into total darkness. Thankfully we have a generator here at work, so it kicked in after a few seconds.

A little over an hour later the power came back on, but our generator apparently didn't like it because everything went down again.
