Wanganui being a long standing English name? And of course the even longer standing Maori names like Taranaki have no place in the scheme?

Wanganui is the name of a settlement, a settlement where the majority of occupants agreed with the original spelling. Even if the original spelling was incorrect in the eyes of some it doesn't matter.

I don't mind my province being called Taranaki at all. I never said I don't like Maori names for geographic locations, only my dislike for dual names as the media and educators tend to quickly drop any reference to the English version. Maori are always wanting to retain their identity and history (which is understandable) should the majority of us have to loose ours just to accomplish this completely token exercise.

With regards to Mt Taranaki (Egmont) I can not see how John Perceval, 2nd Earl of Egmont who never visited the Mount or NZ has any relevance to New Zealands heritage.

He has no less an association than a make believe warrior who caught the North Island while out fishing.

The island on the bottom is Stewart Island/Rakiura

Which actually WAS called the South Island for a while, what is now the South Island (Te Wai Pounamu) was called Middle Island, or even briefly, New Munster. So we could always go back to that. I live in Christchurch, New Munster.

Most equitable to all parties will be the English translation of the Maori.

So the majority of us will live in Maui's Fish and holiday in Wet Greenstone.

What a massive load of bollocks.
North and south they will remain just like most use egmont, wanganui, cook etc.

However the Auckland and not Auckland suggestion is not bad

I'm happy with North Island, South island and Stewart Island, these are the names I have known the places as for nearly 40 years.
Happy to put it to a vote though...

At least the legend of Maui have relevance to New Zealand.

yeah, I'm also quite happy with just North and South Islands..
Also agree on the confusion with overseas companies sending stuff over to a long Maori name, but I guess they would have to live with it.

As long as the overseas company has New Zealand as the bottom address, surely then 'local' companies take over the distribution. Also, how often does the island get included in the delivery address? Can't think of the last time I was asked for this.

All ecommerce systems which I have developed in the last decade ask you for which of the major islands you are on North, South, Stewart, Chatham and Great Barrier, useful for freight calculations.

But this can surely be linked to the name of my city/town, or even better postcode? I always get asked for these, so entering which side of the Cook or Foveaux Straits I live on is a bit redundant?

would not it be better to divide by regions such as Northland, BoP and etc.. to break down the cost... sure it's cheaper to deliver from wellington to Palmerston North, then from Wellington to Russell, but all of these are on North Island :)

and all international shops ask you for region/state or province and not an island...

It does that too, internally I actually have a database structure like...

Planet: Earth
Continent: Europ, Oceania...
Country: New Zealand, Australia...
Region/Island/State: North Island, Jervois Bay Territory...
Province/District: Canterbury.... (I don't define provinces for other countries)

some of my clients like to differentiate freight at a high level, some prefer to micro-manage it down to provinces (and even cities, complete with mis-spellings). Planet and Continent are not typically actually displayed anywhere ;-)

"Most" use egmont, cook etc. Really? I grew up with those too, but I have no problem with Aoraki/Mount Cook (isn't that the offical name?) or Mt Taranaki or Mt Egmont (aren't they both correct?). I guess over time, the old timer/stick in the mud types will have less of an influence.
