NonprayingMantis: because gay marriage is so topical and controversial at the moment, the implication of the billboard is that the reason people wouldn't like their dads husband is because he is gay and there is therefore something intrinsically wrong with gay people, rather than (if it were just 'wife') because they are annoying.

consider how acceptable it would be to put up a billboard that said something like

"I really like my dads new Maori wife... Yeah right"

wow thats not what I got out of it at all, interesting how some peoples minds perceive things.

Very clever ad.

It's easy to justify but at the same time they would have just known it was going to be controversial.

People are going to stop drinking Tui because of this ad - Yeah, right!

Just like people stop eating hells pizzas everytime they hit the news with similar ads. It is just plain out shock jock advertising. Has been going on for ages, and these crowds are doing nothing new. People wither love it or hate it, not much in between.

Really? thats the first thing I thought of, as it has been in the news heaps this week, and I think it is obviously about that.

I think on the other hand this is just a play with the "daugther says I like dad's new wife" that is a common joke - as in new wives usually have some rivalry with daughters, so why not update to new partners?.

yes really, my first thoughts were that it was gay marriage and that now the term "husband" could be legally applied to another male so it was a dig but  I certainly didn't see it as meaning there was something wrong with gay people.

Maybe people need to look more at themselves and why they take offence to things than getting stuck into those that don't.

This sign made headlines a few months ago in Kapiti. It was so obviously having a dig at the gay mayor Jenny Rowan.

People need to lighten up.

Tui is an East India Pale Ale - YEAH RIGHT! Still waiting for that one!

Meanwhile, more tasteless ads for a tasteless product. As others have said, probably perfect for their target audience :-(

The Tui advert has done its job nicely. Look how many people are talking about it. The people that find the advert offensive probably would never consider drinking Tui anyway so they had nothing to lose with this ad. I for one like it.

I'm gay and I found it really funny - cos what it clearly intends is to say/mean is the same thing as if dad had a new girlfriend/wife from a kids point of view as if that person is their new step parent or such.

If someone finds it offensive they clearly need to pull their head out of their butt.

The other thing is - its also clearly designed to start debate about "gay marriage" and its done exactly that so its quite smart marketing wise in some ways.

You don't think that maybe you are over thinking things a little ?  Maybe a little overly sensitive ?

Not really. I'm not personally offended by it, but I can see why gay people who have fought hard for the right to marry would be.

If gay marriage was widely accepted as completely normal by everybody and had been for some time it would be perfectly fine. But since it is such a controversial topic and quite a few people do find the idea of homosexuality abhorrent then advertisers had to know some people would interpret it this way, and that some people are quite sensitive about the topic.

Don't you think my example is similar?  Would you find it acceptable for the ad to say "I really like my dads new Maori wife... Yeah right".
It's apparently the same basic joke i.e. that a step mother is universaly disliked (ha ha!), but the addition of the word' Maori' in there is something out of the ordinary and therefore would be interpreted as the reason for the dislike - which is offensive since it implies Maori have some innate reason to be disliked.
Its the same for the gay bilboard.

Maybe they should release a series of them based on the same joke and see how well they go down:

"Dad's new asian wife seems nice... yeah right"
"Dad's new maori wife seems nice... yeah right"
"Dad's new samoan wife seems nice..yeah right"
"Dad's new disabled wife seems nice...yeah right"
"Dad's new 140kg wife seems nice....yeah right"
