dolsen: I really hope that the other prisoners are aware of what he's done...

Why? Do you suppose that the majority of prisoners have never beaten their kids or step-kids, or nephews, nieces etc?

Time for some vigilante justice?

The first line "jailed for over 3 years". WTF, that makes it sound like a harsh sentence!
30 years, no parole. Sterilisation.

You really need to follow the news more. Too many cases of the young man angry that his GF's kid has cried while he was playing on the console - so he gives the kid a beating.

reading the story my heart broke for the child

guy is an utter scumbag and deserves to be punished to the full extent of the law (which he has been)

however, raging at the judge is misdirected - laws come down from parliament and these set the bounds that the judiciary are required to operate within

want the laws changed? - write / petition your mp

i also doubt the value of deterrent sentences - while you and might consider consequences as (mostly) law abiding citizens with something resembling a moral compass, scumbags don't (ref murder rates in states in the us with and without the death penalty http://www.deathpenaltyinfo.org/facts-about-deterrence-and-death-penalty)

i just wish there weren't so many pricks in the world :(

ps: ideas of "prison justice" are largely myth - most scumbags make it out alive and intact : /

I agree he deserves a harsher sentence but we really need to tackle the the cause of this stuff not just react to the symptoms...

This is a result of a dysfunctional welfare system that incentivises young women with no skills to have kids outside of stable relationships.

from what I understand, prisons have this odd sense of injustice.

If you murder a man. rob a bank or whatever, they respect you.  If you rape a woman or abuse children, you might well get a good beating. The population that do that sort of stuff are often segregated from the others to avoid this.

It's clearly more complicated than that, the guy is obviously scum.

The welfare system that pays the mum to have the kid with the dad that's not around and also pays for the immature violent boyfriend's lifestyle.

It's a toxic recipe that frequently produces this result.

Agreed. I see where you coming from.

Friends of ours. They have a daughter, just turned 16. She has left the house (basically run away), dropped out of school, moved in with the boyfriend, and I won't be surprised if she already has a bun in the oven.

The parents can't do much, the daughter is now claiming welfare. Has no incentive to go and find a job. She even makes enough money to afford cigarettes.

Part of me blames the state welfare system, the other part of me blames the parents.

Where I'm from we never had this kind of welfare "safety net". Its either you made it, or you break it. When I left home I could only do so when I could afford to pay my own way, and that was having a job. If that job failed, I would have been on my own, and in the worst case scenario return to my parents for support. Its made me a better person. I agree that our welfare system has its place, but I'm totally against it for under 18year olds.

Nothing can change what horror has happened here.

However, we can all try to change the future to try to stop it from happening again.

Reach out to a young family now, personally. Too many kids end up being yelled at and told they're useless and end up getting no help to be good parents themselves.

Look around your own street. Get out, say hi, and try to give a hand to a struggling young person. Accept who they are and be there for them. Show them the right path by being a person they can respect and aspire to be.

Don't be put off by the first untrusting or staunch response. Take something to them to offer help and don't judge them. We all need to do this now. No excuses. We all have something to give here to change this. NOW.

Turn that anger you all feel into compassion and you can make a difference.

I think they may see the difference between that (which is still really bad), and attempted murder inflicting life long injury's on a defenseless baby. I don't think this sentence is anywhere long enough. They say an eye for an eye leaves the world blind, I don't agree. An eye for an eye leaves the first few blind, the rest know not to mess with eyes....
(in case it's not clear, despite this case involving eyes, I'm not just talking about eyes).
Also, you get the people saying vengeance is not justice, well, for some people, vengeance IS justice (or, at least closer to Justice than the watered down sentences we have now).

Baby punishing a'hole:
"Plz be strong, don't be scared. You do this $65000 is yours. That's enough to cover all your bills,"

If the guy really wants to make reparation he'll work hard for all his life to pay the millions of dollars in bills that it will cost the mother to raise and provide full time care to a now mentally deficient partially blind child, for the next 30+ years. Also, where did a 16 year old get 65 thousand? Oh right, the assault happened two years ago, "On the night of October 20, 2010". How long did the mother take to report him, and how long was the trial delayed? Did she not report him because of fear, and if so what can we do as a society to empower women like this to escape abusive relationships?

We should have at will abortion in this country, and it should be fully funded. Perhaps then they never would have had a child they couldn't care for in the first place. Sounds horrible, but in some families it really would be better for the kids (and society) if they were never born.

If kids can leave school and leave home at 16 then we need to be teaching them sex ed from 13 or earlier, and not the amusing 'rude words' sex ed but the scary 'this is what can happen if you have sex, and this is how much responsibility a child is'. Also teach kids about relationships, and ways to empower themselves physically and sexually, and importantly how to get out of an abusive relationship; and it's not just females that need to learn these things either. Perhaps these are things parents should be teaching, but it seems to me the 'abusive, kids at 15' cycle just repeats ad nauseum. Can't teach what you never learnt.

Truancy and violent behaviour from minors need to be much better dealt with in this country. I don't have any real ideas here, but currently kids can pretty much do whatever they want, and get very little to no help with family, psychological, behavioural, physical, or learning disabilities. Perhaps things have improved a little since my days in school (I'm 26), but from what I see on the streets and on public transport I highly doubt it.
