TimA: I can be very black and white at times and or abrupt and sometimes inaccurate. If i was someone who was another user and not a VF employee i think i would just get over looked and no one would take the bait.

People seem to be very touchy and very eager to have a comment in that persons posting habits. We 99% of the time dont speak on our companies behalf. We have PR teams and social media teams that handle that but we basically have a input in the community and offer at our own will to assist people. NikT, Dylan, Demeter and social media employees and are paid to sift through Geekzone etc and they would be speaking on behalf of Vodafone.

What does everyone else think?

Here is some feedback from a GZ member in addition. www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=40&topicid=147260&page_no=2#1065701

the fact that you have Vodafone's name in your profile, and post in the vodafone sub-forum, implies very strongly to other people that you are actually speaking on vodafone's behalf, whether you believe you are or not and whether that is your intent or not.

If you identify yourself openly as a VF employee in your profile, then you have to expect people will treat you as one, which means posting under that profile is representing the company.

Now, you might be able to get away with it on random non-telco sub-forums, like discussing home theatre and whatnot. People will know that is just you speaking. But when you post in the Telco subforums it's natural that people will expect that you are speaking for vodafone

We have identified that. I accept that responsibility and understand that in the Vodafone sub forum. The Vodafone hat does also follow me on Facebook and other sub forums. (My Facebook has no relation to me being a VF employee) People have made comments about me when posting in NZ broadband section with my own opinion.

Yes, and no. Posting in other sub-forums is fine. Posting in other telco sub-forum and promoting your company's services while talking down the competitor's got to a point where I implemente a Do Not Post feature - some people aren't to post in competitor's sub-forums anymore...

If a member states they are not making statements on behalf of their employer then that should be taken as being the case and respected.

Its for each company to decide whether their employees actions online are bringing their name into disrepute. Bit like bad drivers in company cars.

I suspect this thread was brought on after the exchange last night with johnr about SkyTV, where he belittled another member with a genuine concern. Johnr and Vodafone both lost credibility in that exchange, but others will see it differently.

The forum still has a FUG and ALL users should abide by it.

God would we get away with murder if that was an accurate analogy. (Well Auckland driver terms)

I haven't seen that one. There have been quite a few threads recently where comments have been made, often directed at Vodafone guys, but also at Talkiet as well. I've been going to say something a few times but thought that a separate thread would be better.

Don't get me wrong, a fair few of the comments from the Vodafone guys can get a bit silly, but also some of the replies feel to me to be a bit precious when half the point of a forum is to debate and discuss.

As always, if any of you feel uncomfortable with a post or wish to report a breach of FUG please click the REPORT option in the menu below the user profile (ignore the Mod Options menu, you obviously won't be seeing that one):

With hundreds, if not thousands of posts every day we mods can't see every single one of them. We need your help to keep this clean.

my view on it is, these people give up their personal time to do this, and often are willing to go the extra mile to insure your getting the best experience. that is an invaluable benefit to this community.

when you put on that hat, you do need to watch what you say.. there are some things which you just cant say without getting that finger waddle.

im pretty sure most tagged member here, has a general disclaimer now, and that's something people need to consider when judging the image they portray onto their company. - they arent just here to support, but also to take part just as any untagged person would.

think the biggest key, is knowing when to go yep, there is that line, it isn't worth the outcry that's going to happen from doing it.

#include <std_disclaimer>

Any comments made are personal opinion and do not reflect directly on the position my current or past employers may have.

I will make a comment here not as the forum administrator but as a user (although once Paul Brislen when wearing the vodafone Comms Manager hat said to me something on the lines that it doesn't matter, whatever I say is always as the Geekzone administrator): regardless of how critic I am of my providers (everyone must know by now I love TelstraClear/Vodafone's HFC network speed while hating how slow they are to actually recognise faults in the network, specially their crappy transparent proxy), I consider employees (of all companies here) real heroes. They do take a beating from some people because there is always those who will hate just for the sake of it.

You folks are great - everyone with a company tag here helping the community.
