I just snapped up a room at an hotel for my wife who is due in from Auckland late afternoon and won't be able to get over to Martinborough if the trains aren't on.

Work has sent home those who can get home. However those that are going over the hill are still here along with those based in the Hutt valley. No one from Kapiti made it in in the first place!

I imagine just about all accommodation in Wellington will be full tonight.

Sounds nasty down there. You all stay safe.

I am still in the CBD and will take a bus home later - waiting for everyone who is trying to drive out of town to go first...

I'm flying in tonight and hoping to get to Kapiti.. Not feeling very confident!

I'm a geek, a gamer, a dad, a Quic user, and an IT Professional. I have a full rack home lab, size 15 feet, an epic beard and Asperger's. I'm a bit of a Cypherpunk, who believes information wants to be free and the Net interprets censorship as damage and routes around it. If you use my Quic signup you can also use the code R570394EKGIZ8 for free setup. Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

Give it a few hours. If its anything like the August quake back in 2013, there was a big rush for those that needed to collect kids, and those that could wait got out of the city much smoother once the roads were reopened.

Just had crazy rain in the Hutt City it was so loud I could not hear the radio, I have never seen the water so high in my place before.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

I live out in Lower Hutt but can't leave town until 4:30pm. Currently there are long delays between Horokiwi and Petone and SH2 is closed between Petone and Melling - with the number of people leaving work early it's only going to get worse so I think I'll be home late tonight, unless things improve and floodwaters recede in the next couple of hours.

My daughter phoned about 2:00pm to say Hutt Valley High School was "basically being abandoned." She'll head to the Hutt City library (or, more likely, Queensgate Mall) and wait for me to get out there.

Meanwhile, it's looking much better towards the Hutt outside my window now...

The forecast for tomorrow in this morning's Dominion Post suggested that we'd get much the same tomorrow but I see that it has improved and there will be much less rain and wind tomorrow.

[Edit: Added the following]
I heard Wellington region Civil Defence controller Bruce Pepperell talking to Danny Watson on 2ZB radio about 2.15pm. It made me laugh. Mr Pepperell spent a lot of time talking about the issues he had to deal with and, in my opinion, he failed to realise that most of us just wanted to know the key problems areas in the region and a few recommendations on what to do. It took too long to get key information. Instead we heard too much that civil defence and associated agencies had to do including lots of problems.

  • "I think that it is important that people realise that we have an emerging situation". Emerging means becoming apparent or prominent. I think it had clearly emerged hours earlier when there were no trains and roads to Kapiti. The landslips, the flooding, the traffic halted on SH1 and SH2, etc.
  • "So all our primary rivers are triggering". Triggering what?
  • Re the flooded rivers and streams "... we're managing that situation." Monitoring might have been a better word, but it is hardly possible to manage the flooding waterways he's talking about.
  • "It's no fun in a sterile hall eating curried sausages" That's a funny image and he got it exactly right.

MikeB4: My wife had to go into the city to pick up passports, she took the SUV and needed it, she said there was a torrent running across the Motorway at Horokiwi. The Hutt River is very high. We have flooding at home for the first time ever. I may need
different tyres on my wheelchair

That looks like really bad drainage. The seaside has very little water.

Stay safe Wellington.
