Everyone would be better off if there were no further updates until the situation is perfectly clear. This won't happen because people want attention and ad impressions.

keewee01: One man has been shot dead but police as not saying if it was a victim or the offender

Witnesses report that it was the offender who was shot and killed

Also reported that a police dog was killed. Feel really sorry for the dog and police affected by the loss.

That is the modern online media for you. Same reason why their front page is full of fluff pieces on celebrities, it's just click bait. A pity they don't do much proper indpeth investigative reporting these days.

TimA: This is in America?

Nope but this is and i was in the area only an hour before it happened. 30-40 rounds have been recovered.

It was not true about the dog.  The shooter was killed.

Full details are on the Police website and Stuff and the usual media sites.

Actually, it's interesting to compare the "media" sites.

I though Stuff's coverage was pretty rubbish initially, and it still is.

nzherald's coverage seems much better (my opinion).

I see kids fainting has already trumped dead man at Macca's

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

Invercargill... the temperature probably made it into double figures and they couldn't stand the heat! laughing
Hope it isn't something ramphant going through the school.

Sounds like the offender was the only person shot - no other people or animals. Good news.

And maybe people want information about the situation because they have children at school in Upper Hutt! I certainly did, and for a very, very long time initially the only information I was getting was from the radio - so a lot of people were in the dark. Nothing to do with attention, but with information since it was so scarce.

Witness say he told people to run away and then fired at the ceiling etc
Looking like a case of "suicide by police"

Now we will need at least 5 separate investigations including a homicide investigation with the Cop as the only suspect.

I wish we could just chuck the body into the back of the meat wagon, hose up the blood and wrap the whole thing up by the end of the shift.

Ok, well maybe something in-between the two would be more sensible.

Information good.... Made up information to fill a vacuum. Bad.

Turns out I called it..

Talkiet:
SOunds potentially tragic/bad, but the initial reports of these things are often very very wrong.

Hope it's not as bad as the initial guesses by news media.

I can't decide whether I'm happy I am right basically all the time when I lambaste the media for this sort of thing, or sad that someone with no connection to the event and no information can tell virtually all of the time when the media are making stuff up, or deliberately reporting eyewitness testimony that they must have near zero confidence in.

Cheers - N
