News reports are coming in that there is a gun man in Upper Hutt Mall and several people in one of the stores have been shot...

All train services on the Hutt Valley line have been cancelled, the Upper Council Offices have been closed and all surrounding streets are in lockdown.

Reports are that there has been a shooting in the McDonalds on Main Street.

Police report that the situation is under control.

SOunds potentially tragic/bad, but the initial reports of these things are often very very wrong.

Hope it's not as bad as the initial guesses by news media.

Probably some dude walking into hunting and fishing to get his gun serviced.
Gun shots probably some road works and they got confused.

I agree with this and I'm getting a little tired of the media these days.

Heard just now on the radio.

Host: 'We're crossing live now to an eye witness for the latest information'
Eyewitness: 'oh I didn't see anything I just saw people running around'

Cue five minutes of the most pointless questions I've ever heard because he was nowhere near the scene.

Just my thoughts on the media, not the situation.

Apparently 2 people were shot by a gunman who was then shot by police.

Luckily many of the shops have closed down in the town, so there aren't likely to be a huge number of people around. We don't want to become another America. And people say we don't need better gun control in NZ. People need to feel safe in their town. It was only a few weeks ago that someone on home detention in Upper Hutt escaped, and it has a huge high security prison too not too far from the town centre. I had heard that they were going to close the local police station, luckily they didn't
