Here is an interesting scenario...

The flag debate successfully distracts the New Zealand public from the TPPA

  TPPA signed into law

Red Peak becomes the new flag

Peak Engineering successfully sues the New Zealand Government for stealing their IP.

I hated the red peak from the start, and really hated it when I discovered it was funded by Gareth Morgan. What's the matter Gareth, killing cats not enough for you?
If I can get a Facebook page started for the laser eyed kiwi flag to be included and get enough people to sign up, can it be included too? I would have liked a larger variety in the four proposals from the Fern, I mean Flag, Selection Committee.
Or maybe we should just have blank ballot paper and people could just draw what they think is appropriate.

I personally don't like the Redeak Engineering company flag.  I don't think it should included as it was about number 35 out of 40   before the final 4 were chosen.  If seems the the designer was a sore loser and setup a Facebook page and alerted the media  who of course tried to make the news rather than report it.

Sorry Dingbat, factually incorrect. The winner of the Morgan Foundation’s $20,000 flag competition was “Wā kāinga / Home”, designed by Auckland based Studio Alexander. http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11509184

I
t looked similar granted, but was not the same design.

Red Peak has grown on me.

Some of the most recognizable flags are simple. I initially didn't like it because I thought it was too simple, but I have since changed my mind.

I can understand the desire to have a silver fern, but I think it looks too much like a logo.

I'll vote for Red Peak as my preferred new flag, but I don't know how I'll vote between that and the current flag. I do think the flag should be changed, but as part of becoming a republic.

Factually incorrect oldeyes, Rowan Simpson who is not the designer started it all rolling with a blog called Dear John http://rowansimpson.com/2015/09/02/dear-john/

H
ow is reporting a genuine public interest in the flag process unworthy of reporting? 50,000 supporters on a FB page is not insignificant.

DizzyD: I have already made up my mind about this whole thing.

First referendum: I will be voting the worst of the lot, Andrew Fyfe's koru flag. If I'm busy, I won't bother to vote at all.

Second referendum: Current NZ flag

Why vote if you are not taking it seriously?

This is taking it seriously. It's a well considered strategy to leverage retention of the current flag. Sounds good to me.

Like that Rowan is showing the Norwegian flag first in the comparison ;)

The red peak has grown on me too. As Rowan points out, the other options are just too complex. And the red peak would stand out and be unique amongst other flags.

Looks like its got strong support as well. Look at the poll in the NZ Herald. Out of about 3400 it gets 50% of the votes, with todays flag only getting 28%: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11517757&ref=NZH_FBpage

Red Peak - meh

Personally I always liked the 1974 commonwealth games logo:

It is a brilliant design but I'm not sure I would want this as our flag.

The coloured square version on the left would be useful for insignia and as a logo. If the square version were to be used then it would be only the third state flag to be square - Switzerland and the Vatican have the others.

WyleECoyoteNZ: ...Of those 50,000 people that signed the petition, how many will be eligible to vote come decision time?

If they aren't of voting age yet, then some day in the future when/if a new flag has been adopted, some of them will be going out into the world to represent our country under our flag, in sports, as diplomats, as soldiers, whatever.  Personally I think if younger people are starting get a bit of a patriotic feeling then good on em, and maybe they should have a say on the flag.

Isn't that more similar to the other flag in the top 40, which was shorter. It isn't the same design, as the colours are different, the angles are different etc. Also the use will be different, and there is no monetary gain for the person who submitted it, as it becomes owned by the country. With any logo, there are likely to be similar ones out there. When you get such a simple logo, then it is likely someone will find another similar. It it wasn't a red bottom triangle, then it maybe seen as being more different. But why can't the colours on the red peak flag be switched around, and have blue or black at the bottom. I mean, what does 'Red Peak' actually mean when linking it to NZ. I doubt the NZ flag will be changed to it anyway. Although it is far better than the alternatives IMO, I don't think enough people will want to change it, as there are no links to the old one. At least the fern and the stars one has a link to the old one, which is why people probably like it.

True, it's the more 'flag-like' of the options.  If it wasn't there as a choice I prolly would have voted on monkey-butt.

It retro and cool, but not the right shape, and has links back to the Union Jack. I guess they could turn the V's into korus, like they did on one of the top 40, which was quite cool. No good for a flag, but a cool desgn.
