They didn't shoot the Planned Parenthood suspect.

I thought the general rule was shoot to kill or don't shoot at all.

No warnings shots, no shoot to wing, no shoot the gun out of his hands, those are only for Hollywood.

Death is pretty incapacitating.

According to Wikipedia they shot at him but shots did not connect with the guy much if at all. At some point after five hours of fire exchange they asked him to come out and surrender and he agreed.

nakedmolerat: What happen to the 3rd guy they caught? Any update to this? Nothing in the news....

San Bernadino police say the '3rd guy' they saw running was apprehended and found to have an outstanding warrant and no connection to the events:

So this case (San Bernadino) is pretty well what ISIL wants.  Not specifically coordinated well-organised quasi-military "freedom fighter" (depending on what side of the fence you're on) or whatever you'd like to call it, having some specific objective, except to generate hatred and fear, and probably retaliatory attacks against innocent muslims by equally clueless and possibly only slightly less radicalised random nutcases on the "other side" and/or Donald Trump style draconian restrictions based on nationality/religion.  Two radicalised nutcases - and again everybody who knew them claims to be "surprised".  A Sufi, radicalised in Saudi Arabia?  No surprises.
I thought the cops handled it well. If it took ten thousand bullets to stop those two and they did it without accidentally shooting innocent people, who cares?  It must have been pretty obvious to them from the outset that it was a terrorist style attack and not too many guesses needed as to what motivated them.  I watched a bit as it unfolded - not that I'd usually get fixated on latest news, but it was live streaming on a small window in news site link I clicked, and it was interesting.  The FBI/polce news conferences were very guarded / careful about what they disclosed, probably for a very good reason.  Last thing you'd want in the heat of the moment is for vigilante action by crazy americans, joining in to protect the homeland in it's moment of need by shooting random suspicious looking Sikhs in the street etc.  So far I haven't read of any retaliatory stupid actions, burning mosques etc.  Probably never completely stop this kind of thing now that it's established as an option/motive for suicidal nutters, but at least deny ISIL any opportunity to use it to promote their vision for holy war.

Maybe they should suffer more?

Generally I would agree but hanging, drawing and quartering is deemed so last century by the liberal hand-wringers.

networkn: You are suggesting putting officers in FURTHER danger by asking them to Shoot to INJURE, whilst being shot at, by crazy people who would kill innocents at a disability centre.

Trials are all well and good if you can apprehend criminals without undue safety concerns to law enforcement and people.

Furthermore, trials cost millions, bullets cost just a few dollars. Little to no chance of not being found guilty.

So, are these people crazy or not? In the sense of legally insane? Because that is a defence against virtually any crime.

Interesting that the FBI has labelled them as terrorists, and presumably therefore NOT insane.

not too many guesses needed as to what motivated them

When I first heard about this shooting, my first guess was that the guy had gone postal. Before all the Muslim terrorist paranoia, that wasn't uncommon. I still suspect that there's more of the postal about this than an organised by ISIS terror attack. My guess is that the "radicalisation" of these people was opportunistic on top of some kind of underlying nuttiness. The scenario I see is that ISIS encounters (maybe even targets) some nut-job in the USA who says they intend to shoot a bunch of people... all ISIS needs to do is provide them with a bit of encouragement and prepare a press release.

Whilst it remains my opinion that you can't "radicalise" a mentally healthy person who has a good future, it is cautionary to think of all the people who were "radicalised" to fight the Kaiser and later Nazism and Communism.
