And for the record: I think the sentences these guys got are perfectly adequate. If you advocate giving up the civil rights, and indeed the humanity our ancestors worked so hard to get, you are conceding defeat to terrorism. Terrorists want you to be afraid. Haha I am way, way too young to make it as a judge. And given that I have abandoned a litigation and big law firm career (I now work in risk management for a bank), I doubt I will be a candidate either. I worked as what lawyers call judge's clerk -- we essentially research the law, give our opinions, and assist with producing written or oral decisions by the judge(s) that we work for, in any way that they see fit. Sometimes it involves producing the bulk of the decision; other times it involves just sanity checking what the judge has written. But of course the ultimate decision rests solely with the judge. If you are lucky enough to work with open-minded ones (as I was), you can be a persuasive, reasoned influence and have lots of laughs along the way. It certainly remains the most enjoyable job I have ever had in law (they only take fresh graduates with the best/better grades - with the idea that you will take what you have learnt into litigation yourself later and, of course, to save money). There is something very satisfying and pure about just doing something because you genuinely believe that is what the law says or should be.

I will happily wear your imaginary terrorist supporter tag if you will concede to being an idiot. Actually, I doubt whether you think you are one matters to any thinking person. If the perpetrator isn't a NZ citizen and only has a visa or permanent residency of some sort, he may be liable to deportation. And, amazingly enough, there are processes governing these things, including appeals to the Deportation Review Tribunal. So how about scared, weedy little people like some of us actually just let the process take care of itself?

I think you'll find that if the guy was an immigrant and NZ citizen, he may not be able to be deported as revoking his NZ passport/citizenship may render him stateless.

It sounds to me like this happy chappy became radicalised after watching a lot of video nastys from the internet. They're not at all hard to find if you choose to look for that kind of $hit.

Hopefully the government will keep an eye on him after he's released. I think they currently keep something like 20 people under surveillance for similar reasons presently.

It has a vastly different process.

Scientific theories are falsifiable i.e. they can potentially be proved to be false as new evidence is found.

It is ridiculous to say that the Big Bang can't be true because you can't reproduce the Big Bang itself.

There is a considerable amount of evidence, that shows the Universe started from a hot, compact, low-entropy beginning and is expanding and cooling.

If you have the knowledge and equipment, you can verify the evidence yourself.

Your religion, whatever it is, won't have verifiable evidence. It will be written in some book (or books) that you have to accept on faith.
