The age of the 757 isn't the problem. There are still hundreds of these in use and they form the backbone of the US domestic network and are used extensively by other airlines such as Icelandair.

The problem is the fact these planes spend most of their time parked up and not being used. This has caused corrision issues which they've tried hard to resolve.

Maybe the RNZAF need to fly a few sectors a day for NZ or JQ when they're not being used!

There isn't really a good direct replacement for the 757, as an aircraft it's a really very very good one, with excellent capability (and especially with the RNZAF mods) in terms of range, performance, and flexibility, for which there just isn't much of a rival. The best replacement for an old 757, is probably a new 757, unfortunately Boeing stopped production of them. On the bright side, the RNZAF would not have much trouble finding a buyer.

As for a "Key One", well, that's part of the 757 (and B200, everybody forgets about the poor old B200 fleet, unsung heros of the RNZAF if you ask me) roles. Being a small country, our assets are naturally multi-role where ever possible.

Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden used a B757 to fly the band from gig to gig. I think they have a 747 now though. Anyway Dickinson was full of praise for the 757 and its capabilities. Talk about job pressure not only being the lead singer for the band but also having to fly the plane.

Personally, I would rather fly Air NZ, Qantas, Emirates, Jetstar, Virgin, than in any RNZAF plane. I would of course make an exception if I was

trapped halfway up a mountain with a broken leg, then I would be only too happy to be winched aboard an Air Force chopper!

Re enough engineers.. Both have just been in recently for a strip-check at CHC #1 hangar. The same place that services the majority of Virgin Boeings and ANZ A320s now that the 73s are defunct ;)

Aussies, they have a massive budget and use the suggested Bizjets. Challenger 604s. And for larger contingency there is the B737 BBJ. And larger than that, the MRTTs

Our 757 fleet gets a good workout come Essendon Airshow (or in the US/UK). World renound for their airshow demo. Youtube RNZAF 757 for kicks. Amazing to see doing 230kt at 120ft into a stall climb. But thats about it in cycle time.

However have been busy recently with NZ support trips to Pegasus on the big ice block

would there have been the same deal made if it was on a commercial airliner?

ive been on 3 qantas flights the have been delayed for mechanical reason. im glad work (NZDF :)) have changed back to air NZ

This thread would be 60 pages by now if it was announced they were buying new aircraft.

These aircraft arent due for replacement until well into 2020's...they are good aircraft and this happens to all jet aircraft. We are a small country and dont need newer, flasher or more....

I am sure RNZAF will be looking at its maintenance regimes in order to prevent this happening as often.

Have they even stated what the issue was? They had a couple of attempts to leave from Townsville apparently, aborted a few seconds after they throttled up the engines. Without knowing. perhaps it's premature to suggest that it couldn't have happened with a brand new plane. They might have hit the panic button when they realised they'd emptied the fridge of Bollinger and caviar.

My son had a few scary incidents on Military transports but still maintains the RNZAF aircraft are very well maintained. On C130s he had two major incidents, first one was returning from operations and flying over the Pacific when the C130 had multiple engine failure, the aircraft was put into a gradual decline descent until the pilots managed to restart the engines, he admits he was getting his spiritual matters in order. The second was while doing his para training at Whenuapai, a C130 he was on was travelling down the runway on its takeoff run when the pilot had to abort applying full brakes etc due to a failure, he still managed to complete the course over the weeks and obtain his wings.

He believes the worst aircraft he has flown in was a Russian Antanov he flew in going to one deployment, it has rattly, smelly and has rust and holes on the inside of the aircraft and things would fall off if you touched them, but they got there.
