I'm not so sure Fonterra is scamming Kiwis. Given the prices of dairy products have been severely depressed until recently and that New Zealand dairy farmers are the most efficient in the world and were struggling with the payout from Fonterra I'd suggest Fonterra wasn't doing any scamming. Remember the farmers own Fonterra so surpluses are returned to the farmers in their payout. If there's any scamming going on perhaps it's in the supply chain between Fonterra and the consumer.

We buy Jersey Girl milk which comes from Matamata and is sold in many of the New World supermarkets around the Waikato region. It's labelled as "organic" which I couldn't care less about, BUT it's like milk used to be. Left standing for a few hours and the cream settles to the top, unlike almost any other milk you buy these days.

We've tried Lewis Road and Puhoi but their milk is crap by comparison. With both of the these the cream forms a solid plug at the top of the bottle and will not mix back into the milk. I don't know what they do to their mik but there is something in the process that changes the milk.

I'd heartily recommend Jersey Girl. it comes in 1 litre and 3 litre plastic bottles, the only process it goes through is pasteurisation.

The separation occurs because the milk is not homogenised. That process breaks up the fat molecules and stops them from floating to the top.

I usually buy homogenised Organic milk from Lewis Road, Puhoi or Kapiti. If my wife is not looking I buy Puhoi Half & Half which is 50% milk and 50% cream - tastes like pure Jersey milk (it isn't though) should taste.

I think if you looked at dairy prices at Coles online shop you may be surprised at Aussie prices compared to ours.

Last time there was a stink about high dairy prices it turned out to be the supermarkets - not Fonterra. As a dairy owner admitted to the NZ herald at the time what his cost price of milk was. I can't remember exactly in the region of $2.20 for a 2L bottle of milk.

And as for the protein - you can get it in NZ, but you have to look for it. As most of the gym supplement shops only sell the US brands. Even though NZ produced protein has a better purity. Normally over 80% while US stuff is often 78% or less. Most common protein grades are WPC450 Which is 80% protein. And WPI895 which is 90% protein. The WPC450 still has 7% sugars and 6% fats in it. While the WPI895 is so pure, it has less than 0.1% fats and sugars in it.

I buy 20KG sacks of the Fonterra WPC450, as it is much cheaper than buying branded protein. Although I have to buy off a reseller as Fonterra won't sell directly to me unless I can buy it in 500KG min lot sizes. It tastes really nice mixed with milk. And I sometimes mix some mass gainer powder into it as well. (Mass gainer powder is normally 1/3 1/3 1/3 protein, carbs, fats, In case you are wondering what it is).

I didn't dispute the price difference between NZ and OZ. I was disputing how that price difference came about. Did you read all of my post where I said the difference was more likely due to the supply chain between Fonterra and the consumer? Another poster has said the same thing

I think its a bit of a scam too.

Very over Fonterra, Goodman Fielder, and NZ's preferential treatment of farmers.

The premeat was a waste byproduct. It looks kind of like snot. Now they add it in, it stinks to me of maximizing profits. (Less waste, more expensive product).

It might have similar nutritional value to milk, but I feel there is a difference when you heat/stretch the milk, like when you make an flat white or cappuccino coffee. You get more gooey (rap in the foam.

Vote with your wallet, and by from the smaller dairy co-operatives that don't do this.

I think a large chunk of what we pay for food - which is all comparatively expensive, not just milk - comes down to two things. Supermarkets that simply have nothing resembling competition in a meaningful sense, and GST.
Many countries would not add their equivalent of GST to food and would not allow all the supermarkets to be owned by two companies only.

The standardisation is something the market would dictate, the majority of consumers do not want their taste and content of milk to be a lottery, they want it the same this week, next month, next year. Imagine how long Cocoa Cola, Steinlager, Pepsi would last if each bottle you had gave you a different taste and experience.

Look at the recent experience with milk when a batch had a slightly different flavour due to the feed a bunch of cows had consumed.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

I'm quite sure that the rest of the world does not pay the NZ price for items exported to us. We are subsidizing the export market so that Fontera can keep up it's big profit margins

Fonterra would simply say "If we can sell the milk to (insert foreign destination) for $Y, why should we sell it to you Kiwis for $Y - 20%?"

I have oat milk on my porridge because it's good source of beta-glucan - a soluble fibre that help keep your arteries clean.

If I'm using cows milk I try and find pasteurised non homogenised whole milk. Homogenisation breaks fat down into smaller particles. There is some evidence (not entirely conclusive) that smaller fat particles are more readily absorbed by the digestive system. You may actually absorb more fat from homogenised trim than whole.

In Nelson I buy Oakland's milk (disclosure: I know some of the company directors). You can buy it at fill your own vending machines and quite a few of the cafes are using it for their coffees etc. In Wellington I buy eco-farm.
