This is a great idea and needed. If done right it could and should replace the Dairying.
Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.
An aspirational target is just words and feel-good soundbites if it's unachievable.
Set a realistic target and make it happen. Also declare an aspiration, and develop a plan to make that achievable too, or explain why it isn't achievable.

I guess we need to plant thousands of trees per day just to replace all those that are felled. Does anyone know how many trees on average are felled daily?
And don't you think the pollution from the huge trucks that transport the logs everywhere needs to be taken into account?
I can't see a massive switch to electric logging trucks happening any time soon.
Hmm, no suggestion of where they plan to plant these trees? If they want to triple the forestry industry in NZ then someone needs to offer up some significant land somewhere.

not sure if you are being serious but sure, go ahead and tank the NZ economy and put thousands out of work while we wait 30 years for the trees to grow.
Common sense is not as common as you think.
Seriously, of all the things to complain about... you people have a problem with an aspirational goal to plant more trees. Who cares if it's "possible"? If they only manage to plant 75 million a year, it's not like you have to declare the project a failure and bulldoze all the ones you already did.

I heard something on the radio about using DOC and Maori land and that they also want to plant native forest as a carbon sink
Maybe we could get some of our unemployed and less dangerous criminals involved in it? Maybe some of our misguided youth?
If we can manage half that, we're on the right track. In fact, if the new government can achieve half of what they promised overall, we're on the right track. Anyone who thinks all that stuff is going to happen in the next three years is naive: but at least now we are heading in the right direction to start addressing some of our problems.

sorry but i rather spend the millions, on planting trees, on the mental health system in NZ, sorry but our young people who commit suicide at a world high rate are far more important than trees , and living in Rotorua surrounded by the worlds largest man-made forest and the redwoods , i dont need more trees.

Happily, it's possible for our government to work on more than one thing at a time. Otherwise, if I had your attitude, I'd say that I'd rather we spent the millions planting trees because where I live there are plenty of felled hills that are useless for farming but have no trees on them, and I don't see anyone around my house committing suicide.
