or to hark back to Luke's slave roots

You meant Anakin right, Luke was never a slave...

Silly me. Here I was thinking Anakin was Luke's dad!

Lolz ok I see what you mean but considering Luke never knew of this (he grew up sipping blue milk) it wouldnt affect his motivations unless you can generically iherit "being a slave"?

PS Does that mean Princess Leia should also consider herself having slave roots too? Shes a princess!

PPS Or does Padme's royalty cancel the slave roots out? Careful or you'll break the internet!

I overall enjoyed it, but the really annoying bit (apart from those silly birds) was the the rebel cruiser is lighter (lighter in space!) so can go faster thing. I mean, it was silly enough the ultra slow bombers that seem to need ground level gravity to "drop" bombs on something in orbit without that. The attackers could have just gone to light speed momentarily and jumped all around the rebel cruiser rather that chasing them for half a day at "impulse". Its not as if everyone (the imperial destroyers that did nothing whatsoever in the whole movie) ran out of light speed fuel! **sigh I don't mind a few physics holywoodisims, but that that is just a step too far.

PS, the crystal Fox things were damn near the cutest thing ever invented

I thought it was pretty bad.

  • The side mission/mutiny with Poe, Finn, and Rose failed and resulted in hundreds of deaths (if not for them the plan to escape unseen to the planet would have worked). But they will still, no doubt, be regarded as heroes of the Resistance.
  • The entirety of the last movie was about finding Luke, then his last grand act of redemption is to provide a 5 minute distraction.
  • Leia doing Superman in space. If she had all these force powers maybe she could have better utilised them elsewhere to help the Resistance?
  • Snoke. What was his story? Doesn't matter, let's kill him REALLY EASILY.
  • Much of the acting and dialogue was just cringe-worthy.
  • What little character development there was was extremely simplistic and one dimensional.

They took a very simple story idea, and turned it into convoluted 2.5 hour mess.

Good point, what the hell was that? Bizarre and pointless.

I see some general themes in the complaints, but personally those things didn't bother me.

Casino bit was too long - Star Wars has always about the little guy triumphing over evil: the casino (as Rose even explains to you) represents the banal evil of the super-rich who give not a single thought to anyone who might be getting hurt by their actions, as long as they get richer. So in that context it was necessary, but the message is somewhat blunted by the fact that the movie also has to be family friendly, so it can't be exactly a Schindler's List level of contrast.

Poe's call to Hux was childishly silly - I see this in the same vein as Han Solo's 'boring conversation anyway' in Leia's cell block. Both were silly stalling tactics made up on the spot by men who are known more for their ability to fly spaceships really well, rather than their oratorial skills.

Luke being a projection - of course he was a projection: his beard wasn't grey!!! (This is my smug "I figured that out straight away" face).

Hyperdrive up the wazoo - I assume the reason we haven't seen this before is the same reason you don't see it in naval battles every day but everyone still knows what it is when they see it: you have to have no chance of escape, yet your impending death has left you with sufficient time and control in order to complete the maneuver. Most of the ships are immediately destroyed once their shields come down, and you don't go ramming ships if there's still a chance to escape. Her shields were still up, but she had no chance of escape because there was only fuel for one more jump, and they would simply track her straight to that location and kill her there. Not a very common situation.

The Republic seems to have been defeated - well, the Rebellion wasn't in a great place at the end of The Empire Strikes Back either.

Overall, my only complaint is that Snoke died and that on the face of it appears to be the end of him. But it was so abrupt and he was given so little exposition (none) that I presume he'll be back in Episode X somehow. Maybe he was never really there; it was a clone or something.

That worried you, but the fact that the crew all walk around on the floor of the ship without magnetic shoes didn't?

Yeah, I noticed the beard immediately as well. I thought maybe he was a force ghost and had made the one last sacrifice he could in order to save his sister.

You could argue that since he died at the end that the result is the same, but the way they did it in the movie felt like a watered down cop out to me.

This is a good read... some die hard Star Wars fans will disagree and cry... but I like the direction of what Rian Johnson is taking for SW8: TLJ.

A good read, and I agree with a lot of it in principal... but it felt like it was describing a much better and edgier movie than what I saw.

No, you get pretty used to there being some Magic artificial gravity system in modern sci-fi, and ships can stop, accelerate and turn without smashing and squashing everything inside even though no one ever bothers with so much as a basic seat belt.  But once something leaves the ship whatever this magic is surely can no longer apply?

It must extend upwards a little way, because the bombers are lower in 'altitude' than the command tower. And that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Maybe the Dreadnought was massive enough to have a large gravitational field? But all those type of considerations fall into to same category as 'no sound in space' arguments.

My comment about homage to 'slave roots' wasn't really aimed at Luke, but more the Star Wars franchise, with a little bit of episode 1. Probably if you look deep enough there will be something from every episode in there somewhere.

I wonder with both Laura Dern and Benicio Del Toro whether they secured the actors and then thought, what can we do with them? Although they may wish they hadn't killed off Admiral Holdo, because they are going to need someone to lead the rebels. Laura obviously only had a one movie deal.

I admit to noticing Luke had shaved before the final confrontation with Kylo Ren, but just thought he had tidied himself up a bit before showing up.

My son went to see it again, this time at an Imax, and said he enjoyed it more than the first viewing.

Considering the original trilogy was aimed at 13 year old boys, they have a pretty difficult job to entertain current 13 year olds without alienating the 53 year olds.

And applied a little "Just For Men" to his beard for good measure.

Kylo and Rey fighting against the red guys were amazing. For a second I could imagine the universe ruled by them. That would be a great plot twist.

In fact a classic example of the disruption of this movie. Now that I have read even more commentary, it is clear that the director had set out to disrupt fan's perception of the Star Wars. It should mean no one can be sure what is going to happen in the next episode. In the same way that it appeared that JJ Abrams had set up Rian Johnson to deliver a standard Empire Strikes Back reboot, Johnson has taken a wrecking ball to that, killing off one of the main villains amongst other things. Abrams will pretty much need to clean sheet things for episode IX. And maybe set up X, XI and XII? Not possible? Pirates of the Caribbean proves otherwise where Disney are concerned.

One of the few things that actually deals with this in a more realistic way is Expanse.
