*****SPOILERS*********YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED**********
Just as with episode VII, I am starting this topic so the latest installment can be discussed without spoiling it for those who haven't seen it yet. Although there must be a statute of limitations for how long you have to keep quiet.

So here is some commentary on Episode VIII having read a bit on line after watching the movie.

I was disappointed they didn't take the opportunity to give Leia the send off she deserved, and I do hope they don't cgi her into the next installment. To me, it would have been better for her to disappear into the ether at the same time as her twin brother. The simple device of empty clothes falling to the ground would have sufficed.

I was initially irritated by the Porgs (little creatures on Luke's island) and thought they were probably a merchandising opportunity by Disney. While the commercial aspect may be true, they were there to cover up (via cgi) the numerous puffins that are resident on the island where those sequences are filmed. The director also makes no secret of the fact that they are supposed to be annoying in a way the Ewoks weren't.

Likewise the island caretakers. Very Disney-esk, but apparently there to show not all creatures are affected by the larger goings on in the galaxy.

The whole sequence of looking for the codebreaker and going to casino was a bit of a waste of time, and the part of the film I found most tedious. Unless it was to introduce a new character for the future in the shape of DJ (Benicio del Toro) or to hark back to Luke's slave roots by referencing the children stable hands who obviously have latent force powers, as shown in the final scene.

I kind of liked some of the humour, particularly Luke's biffing of the lightsaber proffered to him with such gravitas at the end of the previous movie. And the fact that he was dressed almost identically to Alec Guiness' Obi Wan from Ep IV and a grumpy pensioner to boot. At last they didn't use a Jarjar Binks character for comic relief and ff I can only assume his kind were hunted to extinction as a favour to the universe.

The battle on Crate initially reminded me too much of the snow planet sequence in Ep V, but it really did set up the final showdown between Kylo Ren and Luke nicely. The bright red trails left in the salt flats looked awesome. And the 'blast Luke to smithereens ' scene where he emerged unscathed, and even brushed fake dust off his shoulder, had me thinking wtf until the fact he was projecting was revealed. I wondered why they were concentrating on the red footprints leading up to the reveal and the next time I watch the movie I will look out for it to see if there were clues.

There are also nice Easter eggs like Han's rear view mirror dice from episode IV showing up and ending up in the possession of Kylo Ren.

Was their introduction of the black droid BB-9E just to increase merchandising? I can see no other reason for its inclusion.

I believe there will be less confusion and more enjoyment they next time I watch this movie.

Your impressions please.

For me, I found this movie massively enjoyable. I am not the fan that some people are, so I will have missed easter eggs. I agree about Leia, missed an opportunity.

I watched it at Imax and I found the opening rolling story in deep black space with the stars one of the best 3d effects I'd seen!

I'm generally a fan, having been taken by my father to see the original movie when it was released. I was 9.

I found it like the Curate's Egg: good in parts. Other parts should have ended up on the cutting room floor. It laboured a bit and some of the casting isn't great. Both Kylo and the surly Rey are terrible actors.

My missus actually fell asleep in the whole casino bit which says something.

More action, less touchy feely rubbish next time please. The first 3 from 1977 et seq are still the best.

There is an article on Wired about how some people won't enjoy it because there's a black guy and an Asian girl who have important parts to play in the story. I got as far as 'she's pretty'* and 'ooooh, an engineer is going to be important!' but it never occurred to me that it mattered that she was a) a girl or b) Asian. I think that says a lot about the US.

*And no, that's not completely sexist ... Every time I see Benicio del Toro in a movie I think 'damn, I wish I was as cool as him'. And of course he is in this one, and that's what I thought as soon as he appeared.

Didn't the Mirror Dice disappear too? If Luke was Projected - and he had the dice (he took them from the Falcon) - the Dice had to be projected too?

Enjoyed the movie, I though it was probably about half an hour too long, but when it finished, I hadn't noticed the time dragging (which is a sign of a good movie to me).

Agreed that the Casino scenes were a bit long, and it didn't really advance the story.

I was a little annoyed that we did not see how Rey got from Snoke's room to the Falcon too.

Setup for a good Ep 9. I'd give it a good 8.5/10.

I heard George Lucas considered making three prequel films at one point. I'm glad he never did. Same with The Matrix.

I was mostly annoyed that we haven't found out anything about Snoke other than that he's not 50 feet tall.

or to hark back to Luke's slave roots

You meant Anakin right, Luke was never a slave...

I enjoyed the movie however I fear the worst for the franshise. When Poe was doing General Hux on hold gag I groaned. With mentions of Taika being asked to direct I can forsee the movies digressing into fart joke territory (which is fine for franchises like Thor which I really enjoyed but SW isnt the place for that humor - or am I wrong?).

Also agree about the comments about the various OTT CGI elements which reminded me of EP 1 (sadly).

I came out feeling like the movie was very well made in regards to cinematography, but that it did little to progress the overall saga story, and in fact I felt that it lessened all that came before it, which in something like Star Wars is a big issue. It is the most disappointed I have left the theatre from a Star Wars movie - and yes, I saw the Special Edition and prequels in the theatre. If you took the movie and made it generic sci-fi, I think I would've really enjoyed it. But having spent most of the the last two years eagerly awaiting episode 8, at the moment I couldn't care less about Episode 9.

We end the movie essentially at a place where all the actions and sacrifices of our OT heroes amount to nothing, because the galaxy is now mysteriously back under the tyrannical rule of the First Order. Worse still, we're expected to believe that they somehow achieved this complete overturn of the Republic, which has spent the last 30 years re-establishing a more open political environment, in a matter of days or weeks, while being run by some old guy who can't see what's going on right next to him (Snoke), an emo teen (Ben Solo), and the commander from Spaceballs (Hux).

Too much of what came before was discarded, while at the same time some significant scenes being copy/paste from prior episodes.

Much of what was inferred in TFA as being important was thrown away as irrelevant.

There are many moments, decisions, and scenes in the film which amounted to nothing - like the entire Canto Blight sequence. Ultimately, it had no impact on the outcome of anything. It felt like it was a half hour sequence to go "See, pink-hair is schmarter than Poe!".

Speaking of, why did we need Admiral Holdo at all? She seemed to be just a plot device to show us how terrible Poe is. It would have been more fitting to have Admiral Ackbar sacrifice himself to save the Resistance. His death as it is was a disservice to the character imo.

And while the hyperjump-in-to-the-big-ship scene looked amazing, it raises the question of why this tactic hasn't been shown to be used before? Most of the characters involved seemed to 'know' what she was going to do before she did, indicating it is a known-outcome action.

I could go on and on. Overall, a well-made, good-looking movie, that raises significant issues to the overall saga plot, which imo are likely to lead to IX having to spend half it's runtime backtracking and fixing and explaining. A better standalone film by far than Episode I, but does more harm to the overall story in my opinion, so to me is the worst of the series so far. It may well be that in the course of time and repeat viewings (if I ever bother - tbh I don't feel compelled to ever see this one again) my opinion my change, and I'm also aware that some people loved the film, and that's great - opinions can differ :)

Also, for some reason I felt Rey was a bit off compared to Force Awakens where I thought her character was great. This time round something wasnt right but I havent figured out what it was yet...

Silly me. Here I was thinking Anakin was Luke's dad!

This is a good read... some die hard Star Wars fans will disagree and cry... but I like the direction of what Rian Johnson is taking for SW8: TLJ.

Watched it yesterday with my wife and kids and we all came out with smiles on our faces.

None of us noticed the length of the movie but we all agreed the codebreaker/casino/riding through the forest part was a waste of time and although I thought Admiral Holdo was a good part, it really should have been Admiral Ackbar's scene.

I found some of the humour childish and irritating (the Poe and Hux exchange at the start) but some of it quite refreshing (Luke tossing the lightsaber).

I was six when SW came out and I'm not sure why but as an adult I want the SW franchise to be a little more serious and to properly explore some of it's characters and story lines. I know that sounds ridiculous given it's science fiction but I don't want it to descend into a Disney cartoon with foolish characters who bumble their way to a happy ending.

On reflection, I would have prefered the time spent on getting a codebreaker to have been spent on exploring why Rey felt the way she did, how and where Snoke came from or how they managed to track them through hyperspace ? I have my own theory about Finn on that. It seemed like there was more than enough to explore without the meaningless stuff they created for the sake of it.

I thought the last hour or so was excellent, the fight scene on the salt mine was fantastic and I did not see the twist of Luke being a projection at all. That had me hook, line and sinker.

But best of all I love Luke explaining Jedi aren't born or following some kind of lineage. The force is available to everyone to use as they wish and the idea there will always be a dark and a light makes me wonder if there will actually be an end to the story or 'power' will constantly shift between the two.

Finally, I'm off to find a screenshot of the Falcon's shadow when it appeared at the end. Han Solo was god when I was six and I cried when he was frozen. Nothing anyone builds will ever compare to the Falcon :)

Listen to me, I'm 46 for crying out loud !

Hate to say it but I thought it was decidedly average and I too and from the era where Star Wars was what I grew up with and have loved ever since.

I'll whisper it but I thought it was really boring...................ducks for cover

Other than the Casino part I felt it was reasonably exciting.
