It's concerning US law, but still an interesting read.

On the topic of thief traps, here's another persons attempt - http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/guard-given-electric-shock-by-wired-car-drivers-anti-theft-measure-went-too-far-1424714.html

I see that it's not just the Herald and Stuff that don't bother with proofreading; it took me a moment to realise that "pounds 17000" meant "£17000"!

LoL. Yes, I think the decline in reporting standards is a worldwide phenomenon.

"Photographers sometimes keep photo chemicals in used liquor bottles"

Someone could also use left over liquor bottles to store anything. But keep it  locked up to prevent "foreseeable" accidents.

After being burgled  When I go away on holiday now, I leave a Bottle of Jim Bean Black locked in a glass cabinet next to my TV, that also happens to be 1/2  anti freeze. Alcohol is one of the most likely item to be stolen so Maybe the police can bust them turning up at hospital with organ failure.

Stolen goods are often passed on to an innocent person who is unaware of the origin, consumed by unrelated people at teen parties etc.

The attempts to rationalise this behaviour are as bad as the behaviour itself. Mixing anti-freeze, which is poisonous, with alcohol, disguises the presence of the anti-freeze. It is designed to kill or seriously injure. There is no excuse for that.

Putting it in a place (locked in a glass cabinet) that creates the impression that it is 'just' alcohol, only makes it worse. This is a trap designed to seriously harm someone. It is silly, stupid, and evil. Think about it again.

Only a week ago someone prosecuted for poisoning

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11986785

Two wrongs do not make a right. At least the guy stealing your TV is only taking property - intentionally harming a person is taking wrong to a whole new level.

Even though this is the answer to this thread, I just couldn't let you have the last word and stop this discussion.

froob: Crimes Act, s 200, Poisoning with intent
OK, so no setting of poison traps, not even to induce diarrhoea

froob: Crimes Act, s 202, Setting traps, etc
WOW, sound like even setting gazillion mouse traps like in cartoons has a sentence of max 3 years.

Crimes Act, s 202, Setting traps, etc

This makes it perfectly clear. Note there is no exception just because the trap is in your home.

What I find most disturbing about this thread is that the poisoned alcohol post got nine +1's. Sadly, vigilantism is alive and well on Geekzone.

They certainly shouldn't be able to - if you get munted whilst undertaking a house invasion, that should be entirely tough luck on you for being a criminal, but I suspect that in NZ the criminal will win out over the home owner in such a scenario.

Yeah cos killing someone trying to nick my TV is completely fair and proportionate :/

PS: And for the record I have suffered from about 6 different burglaries in my life - so I know what it feels like to have my home invaded and stuff taken - but talking about ending someone for it is just keyboard warrior bs.

This is where we differ. I don't care remotely about fairness to criminals.

I've been burgled twice and wouldn't have the slightest concern what happened to the scum who did it if it prevented them from doing it again.
If they don't like consequences perhaps they could, you know, not commit crimes.

Vigilantism increases when police and law enforcement effectiveness decreases, at a guess.
