If that's the case, it's not just like Brad. That account was closed without prior notice, yours is following some discussion with TM.

You should probably get back to TM in writing, explain why you had the extra account, and why it should be kept open. They will frown upon anyone using false names though.

Well they suspended both accounts so I couldn't do anything with them at all, so I figured they would be better closed. I was mid auction for many items, I've written to Trademe many times but they just ignore me. How did they know I had both accounts?

They might frown upon false names but I frown upon creepy dudes texting me in the middle of the night and traders selling imaginary goods, and keeping your money. Plenty of terrible things going on on tradme, a false name to protect myself from perverts is hardly a crime

Back in the day of Brad (2006/7), my wife had her account cancelled for "accessing 2 accounts from the same IP address".

I don't understand how you could continue to be harassed on your first Trade Me account. The more you explain, the less sense this makes:

Trade Me allows traders to Blacklist other traders so we don't want to have to deal with them. I use this for any trader who does anything I don't want to deal with even if they have not dealt with me. That works very well for me and deals with: abusive language; insultingly low offers; stupid questions because they don't read the description; and so on.
If the bad trader has your email account then blacklisting is done outside of Trade Me and a second Trade Me account will not make any difference.

He found me through that account, and got my phone number. When I black listed him he got his friend to start asking gross questions on my auctions, I blacklisted that guy and they got another friend to do it. So I figured I would leave that account completely. When you have gross dudes doing that you don't really want to hang around, you want to cancel the account and disappear. Otherwise every time you log in you are fearful, god forbid you list something that would encourage them, ie women's clothes. When there are guys like that watching you it's really unpleasant. That's why I wanted to start fresh with a new account, I had some old auctions that were running though so I didn't shut it before starting up the new one. Trademe found this and said you can't have 2 accounts, I explained I wanted to close the original account and stay with the new one. They closed the new one insisting I had to go back to the original with the gross dudes. Get it?

If that's the case, address the actual problem - the people asking bad taste questions on your auctions. Report these to TM, and they will likely have memberships cancelled or similar.

Otherwise, it's a case of 2 wrongs not making a right. It's understandable why you would want to use a different account, but put yourself in a buyer's shoes - why on earth would they give money to someone over the internet who they don't know, and won't give them their actual name?

This sort of thing gets reported in mainstream media from time to time where someone gets arrested for setting up fake accounts and selling stuff they don't have on TM. That's why TM won't allow you to use a false name.

I wish what you say would be true, I went to my local police station made a complaint and alerted trademe but they ignored all of it and the guy still continues to trade. So the only logical conclusion is leave. I wish trademe would kick him and his gross mates off but they didn't so I left. I couldn't care less who I buy my stuff from, they can use what ever name they like as long as I get the product etc, what could that possibly matter? I was getting away with it until I had trouble with a member who didn't send me something I purchased, I contacted TM about it and thats when they took action. Both the perve and the lady who was trading with no actual goods are still going strong on TM but I'm off and out of pocket, seems wrong doesn't it?

No it seems right, because what if you were that bad trader. And you took money and never sent goods, how is anybody, including trademe going to be able to know who you are. This is in their terms and conditions, and you agreed with those terms and conditions when you signed up to use their service. No good harping on how bad they are. As much as I dislike trademe, I think what they are doing here is good as it protects the buyers from dodgy sellers.

I dont see an issue anyway, if they have closed both of your accounts then there is nothing wrong with starting a new one and using your real name as you should. This "stalker" wont be able to find you unless he purchases something from you (you could block him/her on trademe to prevent any sales taking place). The only details he will see on trademe is your new trademe user name, and how will he/she ever know its you.

I guess I'm pissed as they took my account balances and let these other traders remain on TM. I want to know how they knew both accounts were mine? What is the best alternative to TM? There has to be somewhere else I can sell my things?

It depends what you selling. facebook marketplace is picking up quiet a lot. Many people are using it now for selling, especially the younger generation. My daughter sells things on there, she does not even have a trademe account, says the fees are too expensive.

TradeMe allows sign up and instant activation last time I looked. A perpetrator could get going again almost instantly and resume a harrasment campaign.

This pretend thing TradeMe have about using real names is a feel good fiction protection policy. They don't even offer optional account identity verification with credit card.

Address verification is a small barrier available and they do have an option to allow only address verified buyers. Not great for any seller as it cuts the market a bit.

a) it's a real name and b) TradeMe profiles are public including to non members.
