It's good to hear this... I'm glad it's not just me! I was a frikken idiot driver when I was young and I look at my 17yo son and find it hard to believe he'd do what I did... but if I was brainless at that age, full of hormones etc what's to say he wouldn't?

I drove like the grown-ups in my life - monkey see, monkey do. I'm hopeful my kids will drive the way they have seen me drive.

That didn't work for me. I saw the way my folks drove, and I saw the way Ari Vatanen drove, and I tried to emulate the latter. Amazed to still be here, just lucky I guess. I was always interested in cars and fast stuff back then. My lad isn't really interested in driving at all - we had to prod him along and he now does appreciate the convenience of it.

True. I'm sorry I got caught.

I'm not out for every pint of blood, and I favour any restorative measures. I discount remorse as thats often fake, and difficult to tell if genuine. But there has to be a penalty that fits the crime.

I agree, though I have to say as someone who has personally experienced this, there are cases where being caught can help you understand the impact in a way that nothing else does.

As a younger man, I used to drive my car very fast. I thought I was a good driver, had a decent car and regularly broke the speed limit by considerable margins if the roads were dry and straight etc. I didn't drift, skid deliberately etc.

One day coming in from Hamilton I was racing along SH1 and got pinged. Lost my license had to go to court, cost me an absolute fortune, but actually the second part wasn't what affected me, it was getting caught and given a stern talking to by the police officer.

My family had told me countless times about the potential ramifications. Sometimes you just need a different perspective.

It's unfortunate it took that series events to help me see the error of my ways, but to this day I feel bad about the speeds I regularly travelled and make a much more concious effort to be a better and more considerate driver.

I still believe the majority of people who are caught and seem remorseful probably aren't nearly as much as they say, but there will be some.

Reminds me a bit of what my mother used to say to us when we told her we would get motorbikes when we were old enough.

"I'll take you to the spinal injuries ward at Stoke Mandeville. You can have a chat with all the motorcyclists in there. If you still want one after that, go ahead!"

Exactly why we should introduce compulsory professional instruction as part of the driving test and not allow parents to be the only teachers of this skill.

I believe that defensive driving courses should be mandatory along with Skid Control courses.

If National had campaigned on that instead of a second language for every kid, I would have thought that was a much better use of money.

Biggest problem is nz drivers all considered themselves to be "above average drivers".

Many of us did do defensive driver courses because it reduced the time on restricted drivers licence from 18 months to 9 months.

The defensive driving course I did (related to the incident of which I spoke of earlier) did have some crazy stuff in it though.

Example.. Following distance is supposed to be 2 seconds.

I politely suggested to the women running it that perhaps she could explain that if you are driving a 2.5T SUV and following a motorcycle, 2 seconds wouldn't be even close to enough. I was unpolitely told to sit in my chair and take my medicine and that if I was such a good driver I wouldn't be there in the first place.

2 seconds is barely adequate for most people at speed in good conditions. I will generally double that as a matter of course above 60. Have you seen the little trains that drive around - 3 or 4 cars travelling at speed about 6ft from the rear of one another. Idiocy.

I did three compulsory / court ordered defensive driver courses because I volunteered to do them to reduce penalties when I was an irresponsible hoon, and it appeared that the court system never checked to see if you'd been sentenced to do a defensive driving course before. That saved me thousands in fines.

OTOH, I've never been in a real car accident in 45 years driving - so perhaps the courses worked.

I would not call it elaborate. Anything but that really, very basic.

Elaborate would be tracking stuff and things. Not get a mate to buy something and see if its yours.

That's interesting. I've seen 2 accidents in person where a car hit a bike, and the bike stopped SO quick. I guess there are lots of factors. I'd have figured the lighter weight vehicle would stop quicker.

A standard bike like mine, GSX 650, will stop better than a standard car. A better combination of weight, tyres and brakes. If the car was a sports car with a bit lighter weight, wide tyres, it will stop a bit better.

The only time it will really matter will be just after it has started raining and the road will be covered in rubber dust, oil and painted markings telling you to share nicely with bicyclists. The car driver probably won't have to think about any of that.
