The decline in the world trading market order, including the high value of the US dollar and subsidies is more responsible for lower dairy prices than reduced demand due to ethical or environmental reasons.

Should also be noted that soy prices are kept artificially low due to subsidies, even in countries where farm labour is cheap.

The links to certain cancers have not been concluded or excluded and is still under investigation so I didn't include it. . There is evidence the consumption of dairy my increase risks of prostrate and ovarian cancers. oh and I am not an anti dairy zealot, I am intolerant (by medical diagnosis not internet diagnosis) to lactose. I use Zero lactose milk for example.

Overall, the *WCRF/AICR panel concluded that "The evidence is inconsistent from both cohort and case-control studies. There is limited evidence suggesting that milk and dairy products are a cause of prostate cancer.

* World Cancer Research Fund / American Institute for Cancer Research.

I'd also call BS on your claim that there's a proven causative link between dairy and CVD, Diabetes II, Alzheimer's. More likely is if there's a correlation, then it's due to overconsumption of everything and obesity, lack of exercise, and other mainly lifestyle related matters.

Geektastic: Why would I not stick with dairy? Milk is only produced by mammals. Soy beans, almonds etc cannot produce milk and it should not be allowed to be labelled as milk because it isn't milk.

Heart disease, Type 2 Diabetes and Alzheimers are three reasons not to stick to dairy.

Hmmm, there is strong evidence that dairy reduces the risk of Type 2 Diabetes

Here:

You're trying to validate abject BS and scaremongering by claiming your association with "experts" gives you "expertise".  It doesn't.

Doing that while also trying to "put me down" by sarcastically calling me "Dr Fredd" is pretty shameless.

So you accept that I did not state there was a causative link between dairy and CVD, Diabetes 2 and Alzheimers. yes?  it is you that is partaking in adding words .

As for the Dr bit , I accept that that was a cheap shot and I apologise for that.

I was told that off topic threads are allowed slight more off topic comments than regular threads. I could be wrong.

Only from the perspective where my comment was to do with the title not being connected to the post.

I always assumed the 'Off Topic' bit meant unrelated to tech or geek, not the relationship between the title and the commentary.

I don't see you policing everybody else on this thread.

Almond juice and soy juice.

Almond milk substitute. Soy milk substitute.

Milk tastes good. I like milk. I shall continue to drink milk, cook with milk and enjoy milk. I will die of something at some point. I do not intend to live the life of an ascetic monk in the hope that I can enjoy a couple more years of decrepitude later in life...

You mean like my first post? The one that illicited your first response? I'm not the thread police, that is the purview of the mods.

My topic headline was not chosen very well - it was copied from a farming website. I added the words in the brackets.  None of the NZ news sites were carrying the story early this morning, perhaps because a fall in dairy prices is no longer very news worthy.

I notice that most supermarkets put long life milk and alternatives such as soy 'milk' in the same place.   I have seen these right next to the main milk chillers though.

For an Irish view on the global dairy situation I found this article:

https://www.farmersjournal.ie/lacpatrick-drops-milk-price-420613

“We are now very much in the midst of a severe downturn in the dairy markets which is on a par with 2016. The business we operate must reflect the realities of the market,” LacPatrick Dairies chair Andrew McConkey said.
