Anecdotal maybe, but I've noticed that there are far more alternative milk products in the super markets & they are selling well.  Meanwhile the NZ dairy farmers are ramping up their 'green wash' campaign of how well they are looking after the environment.

I've tried a few of the alternative dairy milk products & the one I like best is the Sanitarium Soy.  Do you use any of these products or are you sticking with dairy?

I don't see why we pay $ 1 million dollars for a landlocked 400m2 section while all the cows are pooping all over the lush riverside land just so that the million dollar landlocked owners can have their coffee and smashed avocadoes.

Why does your post bear no correlation to the title?
Are you commenting on global dairy prices (per the title), or on dairy alternatives or on dairy green-washing (per the post)?

I was told that off topic threads are allowed slight more off topic comments than regular threads. I could be wrong.

Surely the rise of dairy alternatives and opposition to dairy farming practices have a correlation with the price of diary.

I am vegetarian and try to limit the amount of dairy I consume - this is mostly blown out by cheese!

Non dairy cheese is an abomination and should be avoided at all costs, but I do enjoy dairy-free milk and yogurt.

Not a fan of soy - I prefer Almond and Coconut blend for milk (Nutty Bruce in particular) and coconut for yogurt. I also quite like Oat milk - it works well on cereal as it already has a slightly cerealy taste.

I am lactose intolerant so always looking for alternatives. I was once given the best description of non dairy cheese. It is what you would imagine foot fungus tastes like. Not surprisingly I have never tried it.

Anything that reduces the aggregate number of cows on Aotearoa is a good thing.

Why would I not stick with dairy? Milk is only produced by mammals. Soy beans, almonds etc cannot produce milk and it should not be allowed to be labelled as milk because it isn't milk.

Heart disease, Type 2 Diabetes and Alzheimers are three reasons not to stick to dairy.

Yes, I agree Mike.
So maybe the title should reflect that, if that is what the OP wants to discuss.
Personally, I believe NZ is past 'Peak Dairy'. There is plenty of land that has been converted to dairy that should not have been. It was a bit like a gold rush, but large portions of regions like the Canterbury Plains are not suitable for dairy and are suffering as a consequence.
Dairy in NZ is a bit like forestry, where the (virtually) raw product is exported rather than being converted into higher value commodities.

Disclaimer: I am from a multi-generation farming family, although not a farmer myself.

Really?

You forgot cancer.  Anti-dairy zealots and vegans usually include that on the list.

Negative environmental impact of intensive dairy farming plus the cruelty inherent in the industry?

(He says as a cheese eating vegetarian...)

Large amounts of NZ dairy production is exported. Including to countries with lower environmental standards than NZ. So less dairy production and exports will likely mean more pollution in overseas countries.

Intensive horticulture needed to grow Soy and other crops for artificial milk is definitely not good for the enviroment. Lots of fertilizer, pesticides, sediment runoff from plowing and harvesting which is done by machines that use fossil fuels.

As for greenwashing, considering that the government thought nothing of killing an entire industry and it's export earnings (oil drilling ban). Even though it is likely to increase total world emissions. And the previous Labour government tried to introduce punitive taxes on farmers (fart tax). So no surprises that some greenwashing is happening. When you have governments that don't consider science and economics when making policy.

Only from the perspective where my comment was to do with the title not being connected to the post.

I always assumed the 'Off Topic' bit meant unrelated to tech or geek, not the relationship between the title and the commentary.

The links to certain cancers have not been concluded or excluded and is still under investigation so I didn't include it. . There is evidence the consumption of dairy my increase risks of prostrate and ovarian cancers. oh and I am not an anti dairy zealot, I am intolerant (by medical diagnosis not internet diagnosis) to lactose. I use Zero lactose milk for example.
