That's weird. My (American) wife and I communicated online for six months, then she came here on holiday and was able to get a work visa under the partnership category. We had never lived together before she arrived - yet she got the visa, then residency, then permanent residency. Today she has dual citizenship. Maybe the rules changed since 2004?

She is a US though quicky, Russians are descriminated against like they are all Dr Evil.

Just skyped with her and was a bit heart breaking. :-(

So she want to be in NZ, then have you look at a student visa, she studies doing a diploma in hospitality, you support her and live together, then if after a year, and still in love, get married and apply for spouse visa - then you can say I love her, live with over a year and have been supporting her while she gets a diploma to help in a job in NZ when she can work legally, all of which will look good the spouse visa app.

been to Russia in 2000, big country, out of the major cities, not alot of English speaking people but when there is someone that does speak english love to talk and practices their English - had lot of good drink just talking on the trains. My AK47 language was very good at board crossing, got the message on where to go loud and clear from the board control ;) (was Mongolia / Russia border so not too surprising on no English, then spent the afternoon teaching the local kids how to skip stones over the river to Mongolia well I wait for the connecting train, again no English, but a lot of fun with sign etc to "talk" to each other) Outside of the big city I felt very safe and enjoyed it, the big cities, some area with the gang I did not feel safe, but same said with any big city I have been in, some area are better than others. I really enjoy it, but you need to know the rules and a lot of queuing to get stuff done, like train tickets.

i know of someone in a very similar situation who had every application rejected "because had not lived together for 12 months" and after seeing one they are about to be citizens soon

are you in AKL?

I can't tell you what it would be like at all. Never been to either country.

What I can tell you is if you really want to give it a go you have to at least visit to see for yourself.

You don't want to live the rest of your life wondering. I would go, and see if it is for you, if she wishes to live there and you decide you don't want to, then I guess its one of those It didn't work out scenarios. If you go and you like it then I guess its all good news. And if you both decide to come back here then perhaps that's an option as well, at least you have given it a go where she was from.

If you don't take a chance, you might regret it or live your life thinking of what might have been....

Just my opinion anyway.

Yes a Masters I believe, in philology, both English and Russian. But in Russia, pay is sooooo low I feel blessed now haha. And jobs are few. So she does this role which is front reception but she essentially manages the business just they dont give her the title

Thats like $50k, that seems ridiculous. $23k in course fees plus living costs.

Ok, you will definitely not want to send any money to anyone on the other side of the planet before a firm commitment, visits, etc.

If you visit, make sure you let someone here know exactly where you are going, how to contact you - even have something like Life360 installed on your smartphone (and make sure you have someone back in New Zealand using the same software in the same circle/family as you). And never meet anyone at night but always in daylight with lots of people around. Also don't carry cash with you and don't withdraw cash there to give to anyone. If you decide it's the way to go you do it later, when back here. And make sure that you don't into the trap of "Oh, another last minute problem, please send more money".

You need to be happy but also safe.
